Final Ratings (out of 5):
Base Set – 4.5
Fun – 2
Overall Design – 4
Value – 3.5
Rebuy – 2
Total – 16/25 (64%)
The base set consist of 68 prospective NBA rookies. The cards feature the young men in their college uniforms in some sort of action pose with a basketball in hand. If you look closely, the background is grayscaled and you can tell there are people in the stands. Each card is denoted as a rookie card. And that's it for the base set. It's just 68 rookie cards.
There are five insert/subsets that go along with the base set. These feature a mix of rookies, current and former players as well as personalities outside of basketball. Why there are people that are not basketball related in this release is beyond me.
Each box guarantees at least four autograph cards. At this price point, that's a great deal. It really offsets what is otherwise a lackluster release. I know there was a lot of changes to the inital plans for this release as it was cancelled at one point only to be added to the lineup later. The inability to have certain players sign really hurt this overall.
Previously, this had only been released in football (started last year). However, there's a serious issue when you receive more duplicate than cards in a base set. While it's great to complete the set, there's absolutely no need for this many extras. Also, there's a lack of current players as you can find in the football release. Though it's nice to see Upper Deck put out another basketball release before the exclusive deal goes into action, this would have been better off cancelled.
Once again, I'd like to thank our wonderful sponsors at Upper Deck for giving us the opportunity to open and review this release. For more information on all their products, you can check them out at www.upperdeck.com (http://www.upperdeck.com).
