View Full Version : Images in Signatures!

In response to numerous requests for images in signatures I've given in and added this as an option to all members.

I personally find large images in signatures very distracting which is the main reason it has never been implemented on SCF.

With that in mind I've put a couple of limitations on the image size and number of images allowed.

So here is what you can now add in your signature:
1 image
Max Size 100 px high / 300 px wide
Must be in vb code - See how Here (http://www.sportscardforum.com/forum/misc.php?s=&action=bbcode)

Enjoy! ;)

BTW- If you want to show of your sig image post in this thread and let us see what you got!

This is slightly off-topic here, but I thought this might be a good place to ask. I cannot get my avatar to work. It is a jpeg file under 100,000 bytes, but I get an error whenever I try & upload it. Please help. Thank you.

OH NO! I HATE long sigs with pics...I'll scroll for 2 days on a single beckett thread to see 5 posts... I was perfectly fine with the 5 line limit... Hopefully this doesn't get out of hand... I know some people like it, personally it's the one reason I spend so much time here and not as much on other boards... Have to say, I agree with Rick on this one.

Just thought I'd try my hand at designing my first signature image and see how it goes. I made it a clickable link to my website. I think keeping the size rather small is a great idea.

EDIT: Thought I'd now try my hand at an animated sig image.

BGray

Well, this isn't set in stone but I'm compromising with the people who do and don't want sig images.

I personally do not like the large sig which is why I've set the max to 1 image no more than 100 pixels high and 300 pixels wide.

The line limit of 5 is still in place.

I think that just gets rid of the attachments....there is another one that says show signature and it gets rid of them if you click no....it just makes a large grey area where the signature image was....

Personally I like the images in sigs. As long as it has a limit as it does folks won't have to spin the mouse 15 times to get past a page :)

I like images in sigs, too. Gives you a little more expression potential.

However, I think this must be modded VERY carefully to prevent oversized or inappropriate images. We're putting a lot of faith in the members of SCF, so I hope we all can handle the use of a larger picture banner.

Other than that, wave those banners, ya'll! I've seen some good ones, and this rule has only been instated for a day. Keep em coming!
Regards,
Mike

(Wow, I don't have to say that anymore! My banner says it...

If you try to use an image larger than specified it won't let you use it...I tried...lol

Also, would imagine you have to use a hosting site for the image.

Can anyone tell me how to put a picture in my sig? Thanks in advance.

I put instructions in this thread.

http://www.sportscardforum.com/showthread.php?t=138687

*****Copied here for easy access. *****

First you have to upload it to an image hosting site (ie. somewhere on the internet). Then you have to add the link to that site into your sig.

Put the site name in between :

and

all on the same line in your sig.

I can't really type the real thing here, or else this forum software thinks I'm trying to add a link. So this is the real code with a bunch of spaces in there.

[ I M G ] h t t p : / / w w w . yoursite . c o m / yourfile [ / I M G ]

Another useful tip. If your image is too big (larger than 300 x 100), you can resize it with the link in this thread:

wouldnt it make sense for banners to limit the size of the file instead of the image dimensions?

Turd Ferguson
02-23-2006, 06:20 PM
The image dimensions size limit is to keep SCF from looking like other boards where after a one line reply, it takes a page of scrolling to get through the signatures.

Pacerbballer2
02-23-2006, 06:29 PM
i see, but under that thinking how would 400x100 or 500x100 be any diffferent than 300x100?

thanks

Turd Ferguson
02-23-2006, 06:44 PM
The size is what was determined when images were allowed on SCF. If we didn't limit the size width wise then the banner would make the pages that much wider & you'd have to scroll right to read everything. The size is what it is, and I don't see it changing any time soon.

Pacerbballer2
02-23-2006, 06:49 PM
ok but pic would have to be at least 900+ pixels wide for it to affect width at all

Bonds_25

Still can be distracting to the viewer to see a long drawn out banner. Sure 50-100 pixels wouldn't hurt much but then down the road you will have similar requests. It is what it is, and 300x100 seems to get the job done.

i agree with the above,

an idea:

make the banner size dependant on how many other lines there are in ur sig, like if i only have a banner and nothing else, u get 300X500 or somethin,

just throwin aroud ideas

Pacerbballer2
02-23-2006, 11:48 PM

Sure I'd like to see 400x150, but rules are what they are. If you don't agree or dislike them. Then don't use a banner. I don't believe that this rules affects anyones ability to do trades. But makes it easier for people with slower computers to actually view the posts and make trades with people such as you and me. Or you can just go on strike. Circle Rick's house till he complies with your demands! I suggest you do this during the summer months, winter is just way too cold! LOL

Actually yes, it would bother people if banner sizes were increased. An "inch wider" would mean a 33% increase in the image file size. Increased file sizes = longer webpage download times. You don't want to see more "Server too busy" error messages from SCF, do you?

All I can say is if you want to use a large banner, do it somewhere else where they don't care if their boards are nothing but pictures instead of posts. We're standing firm on this issue.

I can understand the height requirement, but what is the reason for the 300 pixel width? It seems that a 500 pixel width would be equally as distracting...

Basically, the size is what the old owner of the site decided to allow, since it was his site & he could allow or not allow what he wanted and that is what we are still allowing.

Well that's understandable. Is there anyway we could motion for a lager width? I can also understand the can of worms this could open, but IMO it is better to have the wider sig pics, as it fills the space up better.

Maybe we can do a vote?

I know rules are rules and if I don't like it I can use another board. Hope I can express my opinion anyway without getting anybody too upset. I think it is a bit silly to make a big deal out of a banner being 400x100 instead of 300x100. Such a small difference in width does not affect viewing of threads. My banner now is much harder to read, so that actually might affect my ability to trade. Just my opinion. Hope I didn't offend anyone.

No one should be offended and I think everyone is entitled to speak their opinion as long as it is done respectfully as you have done :)

I think alot of it has to do with the bandwidth of the server (please correct me if I am wrong someone!) Personally, I agree that it is such a small difference, but if everyone used just a bit more in their banners it would make a huge difference in the space used.

Thanks for expressing your opinion tactfully and without an argumentitive tone :)

I don't honestly see what the big deal is. 300x100 is just as easy to create as 400x100. I agree that 400x125 is usually the standard size for a nice sig, but if you got skillz you can work a 300x100 sig and make it better than the larger sizes.

I also agree that I hate going to beckett and looking through some of those trade threads, people actually post all of their set needs plus a sig. plus a few lines of the good/bad traders they dealt and a picture of their favorite card and it get's pretty annoying.

Mods/Admin/Site Owner .... keep it simple, that's what makes this the best site out there!!!

I've had to edit/delete several banners in the last 24 hours - the most I can remember editing in such a short time span. I hope this situation has been cleared up now, because apparently it was confusing some posters.

The pixel rule is still 300 width and 100 height max.
