On June 18th, 2011, my wife Becky and I decided to run a fund raising yard sale for the Diamond Blackfan Anemia Foundation.  Why Diamond Blackfan Anemia?  This is the disorder that my daughter Olivia has been diagnosed with.  Diamond Blackfan Anemia or DBA, is a rare blood disorder in which the bone marrow (the center of the bone where blood cells are made) to produce red blood cells.

So why am I writing about a yard sale that occurred in Buffalo, NY for a Sport Card Collecting website?  Because I want to share 2 stories of generosity that SCF members did for this cause.  Both members took the time to look for, send and pay to ship cards out of their own pocket to support my daughter and the foundation that hopefully some day will facilitate the finding of a cure.

The first member that sent a donation for the yard sale was from a member of the “SabreMafia” on SCF, senrab.  While Kathleen is not very active at this point, she reached out to me on Facebook asking if I would she could donate some cards.  Her message to me stated that she had a bunch of cards that she wanted to move as opposed to throwing out.  So I happily agreed to take them for the yard sale.  When the package arrived, I was completely shocked to see the number of rookies, inserts and a few Game Used and Autos that were included with this shipment!  With this shipment, I was able to create a .10 cent box for the base cards and a dollar box for the rookies, inserts and non-base cards that I received.

The second member reached out to me was ac4760.  Alan initially reached out to me after reading about a post taking about a 2010-11 Limited Jersey Prime of Ryan Miller that I was going to raffle off at the yard sale.  He asked if I would be interest in a 2007-08 SP Game Used Ryan Miller Lettermarks Auto #/50 to use in the raffle!  My response to him was “Are you serious??  That would be very, very cool!”  After giving him my address, I had the card in my hands in 2 days!!!

The cards overall did not see much in the way of sales, the raffle of the 2 Miller cards helped raise an additional $32 towards the overall total, which was $687.97, which we made an even $700/USD.

While the sale of the cards and the raffle donations did not yield more for the foundation, Kathleen and Alan both took the time to help out an organization that is near and dear to my heart.  I am extremely grateful that both members would take time to donate and pay for shipping cards that would be used for a fund-raiser!

I do not think I can say this enough, but to Kathleen and Alan, Thank you very much.  Becky and I are thankful that you would take the time to do this for our little girl.
