Let’s see where to begin to discuss this crazy relationship that some call a hobby but I prefer to call a lifestyle. Now, I’m going to tell you a little story about how I got addicted at an early age and how it has carried on for over twenty years. I started collecting baseball cards when I was only four years old. Now, as you all can probably figure, at that time being only four years old, I really didn’t understand the concept of the hobby of collecting sports cards. I loved the Atlanta Braves More >

Even when the NFL isn’t in season it seems to dominate the headlines. Peyton Manning’s contract situation almost overshadowed the Super Bowl in Indianapolis and now this New Orleans Saints defensive bounty story is dominating the A-block on Sports Center day in and day out. I don’t want to get into a “he said – she said” type piece of writing here, where we are analyzing every word said about the subject and making a decision about an issue in which we don’t know all of the facts. Instead I’d like to bring up a point More >

As collectors, the cards we collect and our reasons for collecting vary widely. We all have our story, especially us old guys, and here is mine.
I remember the first card I ever owned, a 1971 Topps Dick Green. I was seven. I don’t recall how it came into my possession, nor did I realize what that single card was going to inspire. I’ll be honest, at that time I didn’t even know who Dick Green was, with the only athlete that I recall having knowledge of at that time being Johnny Unitas. But the times they More >

Well, I sure do and I miss those days. I miss the times when my friends and I would go around and collect pop bottles for the refund so we could go buy packs of cards and a bottle of pop. We’d sit down outside on the curb and rip open our packs and you’d hear a half dozen kids in harmony saying “need em, need em, got em, need em, got em….” Then the trading would commence….
“Hey, I’ll give you a Lou Brock & a Goose Gossage for that Pete Rose & Dave Concepcion?” “Nah, More >

If the Montreal Canadians made the headlines for the right reasons during their 2009-2010 playoffs run, they are now making them for all the wrong reasons. An abysmal start to the season, a truckload of injuries, a big money contract given to an ageing and hurting defenseman, a coach firing, in-team fighting and , the final straw, incendiary comments by the team’s top sniper (when things are going well) closely followed by an in-game trade. No no, this is not the scenario of a sporting soap opera but in fact the outline of the season More >

What does card collecting mean to you? To me, growing up it was another way to connect with my parents, they would buy the packs of cards and we would open them and spend time together going over the cards we had gotten and the ones we still needed. My mother and I could sit for a few hours a week talking and putting together the sets that we were working on. It was a great moment in time and something I still remember when looking at all those boxes of cards that are still sitting More >
