What Should I Break: A Beginner’s Guide
Jul 11th
by RGM81 aka Richard McAdam
When it comes to spending our hobby dollars, there is no shortage of options available to hockey card collectors. In a market with nearly 30 products released each season, a person can easily be seduced into abandoning any sense of budgetary restraint in order to bust some wax. The manufacturers astutely cater to every possible demographic, creating a wide array of products that start for as little as a dollar per pack all the way up to $400 for a tin of The Cup or Dominion. There is something out there for every budget, and this More >

Jul 5th
By RGM81 aka Richard McAdam
Every year hockey fans are treated to a “Christmas in July” with the arrival of the free agency period. Once the clock hits 12:01pm EDT dozens of NHL player contracts expire and thus the frenzy to sign that key cog in the wheel begins. Thirty teams are all competing to get through the first fax, the first phone call, the first e-mail to available players and their agents in the hopes of luring them to come play hockey in their fair city.

Remembering the Madness
May 27th

The news hit me very hard. I just stared at the monitor for a couple of minutes trying to digest the words that were flashed on the screen. Usually when I have something newsworthy in front of me I pass it along to the closest person available for a quick discussion. The Economics of Player Collecting
May 17th
By Richard McAdam aka RGM81
Approximately twenty-two times per year, I have the great joy of doing my initial run-through of a new hockey product’s checklist. While the search begins as a general scan for various subsets and players of general interest, it does not take long for me to get to the main purpose of the checklist search and utilize the Crtl+F function on my web browser/Excel to look for two particular names. This is the routine of many player collectors, I am sure, to scout out just what Upper Deck/Panini/In The Game have in store for us in the More >
The Late Season Product Lull
Apr 17th
By RGM81 aka Richard McAdam
As the NHL’s regular season comes to an end, setting the stage for another exciting Stanley Cup Playoffs, fans are focused primarily on the activities on the ice and on the out-of-town scoreboards. With parity never having been more prominent than it is this season, the standings in both the Western and Eastern Conferences remain very fluid. Only half of the 16 playoffs spots have been clinched at the time of this writing, and teams that were written off at Christmas time such as the Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs remain mathematically alive in the More >
Vindication: Carey Price’s Bounce-Back Year
Apr 13th
At the conclusion of the 2009-10 season, the future for Carey Price as a Montreal Canadien was a giant question mark. Coming off a 13-20-5 record with a 2.77 GAA and .912 SV%, he had lost the starting job to Jaroslav Halak, who helped carry the Canadiens to their deepest playoffs run since 1993 and had fans Photoshopping “HALAK” on stop signs. Hockey was not a lot of fun for Price, as he’d often find himself producing 35+ save performances only to have an L in the ledger, resulting in many sticks being smashed and More >
