The Psychology of Sports Memorabilia: Why we Collect
Jan 7th
When people ask “Why do you collect?” many of us would probably simply say, “well, because it’s fun.” But there’s always something behind why we find it enjoyable.
The origins of collecting go way back. Humans have a deeply ingrained need to hoard things that will help us survive the next winter or natural disaster, or surround ourselves with items we find important to us. Some player collectors are like the Biblical Noah, collecting one of each type or ‘species’ of card. Others collect many of a smaller number of types. Still others collect many of More >
Being a Kid at Heart
Nov 18th
By John Holzapfel aka jna1488
Can you remember the moment in your life when you became a sports fan? I was thinking about this the other day, and a flood of memories filled my mind about some of the happiest times in my life growing up and they all revolved around sports and sports cards. I am in my 30s now and still find myself acting like a little kid when I watch my favorite team on TV. I’ll throw a temper tantrum when my team is losing and gloat when they are winning. When I open a box of cards, More >
Curse Reversed: How 86 Years of Heartache came to an End

Ask someone what other team comes to mind when mentioning the Boston Red Sox and the answer will always be the New York Yankees. What other two teams define the term “rivalry” in baseball, and arguably all sports in general, better than the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees? A large portion of the greatest players to ever grace the game have donned the classic ‘B’ or immortal pinstripes. Each team’s home, up until 2008, is a classic baseball cathedral. Over 100 years of bad blood and almost exceptional hatred for one another has More >
Growth as a Collector

I cannot remember a time as a child when I didn’t have sports on my mind. It started with baseball and summers full of afternoon backyard games with friends and nights camped out in front of the TV watching Yankees and Phillies games. I still remember laying on the floor in front of the TV in a muggy house without air conditioning eating Freezepops and waiting for Mike Schmidt’s next at bat. I didn’t get into card collecting until one day when those afternoon backyard games turned into a card show off and swap event. I More >
Bend it like Blanda
Sep 19th
By David Rudick aka Rudickulous
If Brett Favre was considered too old to play in the NFL, somebody should have carted George Blanda off to the nearest retirement home eight years before he even considered it. Truly a force to be reckoned with, the Canton Football Hall of Famer was known as one of the most unbelievable players in all of football. Playing in four different decades (40s-70s), “The Grand-Old Man” made four AFL all star games, five All-AFL selections, two All- Pro selections, the UPI, AP, TSN AFL MVP in 1963, League champion in 1960, 61, and 67, and a More >
The Finnish Flash, The Ageless Wonder

In sports, it seems that age is almost as powerful as on field/ice/court play, even more so in a physical contact sport like Football or Ice Hockey. Age determines your selling point on a free agency market/trading market, it determines when you’re supposed to retire. Without exaggeration age is about as important to sports as your talent level. Whether it’s “Completely full of potential” young age of 18-23 years old, the “They’re at their potential, we know what to expect” age of 24-33 years old, the “past their prime, still able bodied” age of 34-36 years old, More >
