Nobody Left to Fire: Why Pierre Gauthier Must Go
Feb 26th
by RGM81 aka Richard McAdam
It feels like such a long time ago that the fans of the Montreal Canadiens could feel a genuine and lasting sense of positivity about their beloved club. When the season began many trumpeted that the team was on the cusp of reaching the upper echelons of the National Hockey League. Buoyed by the faulty logic that the team “was just one goal away from knocking off the Bruins” and thus—in Maxwell Smart-esque “missed it by that much” fashion—in a great position to challenge the Bruins for supremacy in the Northeast Division, Canadiens fans entered the More >
Jacques Martin’s Firing Overdue
Dec 21st
By RGM81 aka Richard McAdam
The announcement of Montreal Canadiens’ head coach Jacques Martin being “relieved of his duties” reached me while I was at the monthly Halifax card show. Oddly enough, CTV Halifax news anchor Steve Murphy (himself a collector) was the one that broke the news to the hall, having received the information on his Blackberry – word spread quickly and when it reached me I was relieved and happy. Martin’s philosophy of defence first had become stifling of the Canadiens’ skill and talent, and it was apparent on some game nights that he had lost the confidence of More >
NHL Realignment Explained
Dec 6th
by RGM81 aka Richard McAdam
Late in the evening on December 5th, the National Hockey League’s Board of Governors announced its plan for what it calls “radical realignment.” The East/West Conference alignment we have known for the past several years will fall by the wayside after the 2011-12 season once the new plan is formally approved by the Board, the NHL, and the NHL Players Association. Instead of two conferences divided by geography, we will see next year four conferences. They are as follows:
Conference A: Anaheim Ducks, Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, Phoenix Coyotes, San Jose Sharks, More >
The Big Goalie Contract: Securing Long-Term Success or Financial Albatross?
Nov 11th
by RGM81 aka Richard McAdam
Nashville Has Their ManThe recent signing of Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne to a 7-year, $49M extension with the club has ignited considerable discussion regarding the role and value to a team’s success. After going through a lull in the market in recent years, it appears as though goalies are back as a high priority for a team looking to achieve lasting success in the NHL. There have been several large contracts awarded to netminders in recent months, and this seems to indicate that the days of teams thinking they can get by with average More >
Can the Habs Save Their Season?
Nov 9th
by RGM81 aka Richard McAdam
There was so much optimism going into this year. Carey Price was coming off a career year. P.K. Subban was going to improve on his rookie campaign in which he tied a Habs’ team record for goals by a freshman blueliner. Max Pacioretty would be back stronger than ever. Scott Gomez couldn’t possibly be as bad as he was in 2010-11. Andrei Markov would finally return to quarterback the power play and stabilize a defence corps that had over a dozen guys play the point for the Habs in ’10-’11. And of course, the greatest false More >
The Time For Product Adjustment Has Arrived
Oct 5th
By RGM81 aka Richard McAdam
I have been advocating for some time now the need for the NHL Players Association to tell Upper Deck and Panini that it is time to scale back the number of licensed products on the market. This is not simply the lament of a player collector that is overwhelmed by the constant influx of new cards—though that statement certainly applies—but rather the growing concern of a hobbyist that the market is on the road to collapsing underneath its own weight. There is simply too much of everything, and only the NHLPA can do something about it.
