The Big Goalie Contract: Securing Long-Term Success or Financial Albatross?
Nov 11th
by RGM81 aka Richard McAdam
Nashville Has Their ManThe recent signing of Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne to a 7-year, $49M extension with the club has ignited considerable discussion regarding the role and value to a team’s success. After going through a lull in the market in recent years, it appears as though goalies are back as a high priority for a team looking to achieve lasting success in the NHL. There have been several large contracts awarded to netminders in recent months, and this seems to indicate that the days of teams thinking they can get by with average More >
Can the Habs Save Their Season?
Nov 9th
by RGM81 aka Richard McAdam
There was so much optimism going into this year. Carey Price was coming off a career year. P.K. Subban was going to improve on his rookie campaign in which he tied a Habs’ team record for goals by a freshman blueliner. Max Pacioretty would be back stronger than ever. Scott Gomez couldn’t possibly be as bad as he was in 2010-11. Andrei Markov would finally return to quarterback the power play and stabilize a defence corps that had over a dozen guys play the point for the Habs in ’10-’11. And of course, the greatest false More >
The Time For Product Adjustment Has Arrived
Oct 5th
By RGM81 aka Richard McAdam
I have been advocating for some time now the need for the NHL Players Association to tell Upper Deck and Panini that it is time to scale back the number of licensed products on the market. This is not simply the lament of a player collector that is overwhelmed by the constant influx of new cards—though that statement certainly applies—but rather the growing concern of a hobbyist that the market is on the road to collapsing underneath its own weight. There is simply too much of everything, and only the NHLPA can do something about it.

The End of The Line for Crosby?
Aug 24th
By RGM81 aka Richard McAdam
Throughout the summer there have been sporadic updates on the condition of Sidney Crosby as he continues his rehabilitation from a devastating pair of concussions he received back in January. The news from the Pittsburgh Penguins that surfaced in early August is that Crosby is still experiencing “some recurrence of concussion symptoms,” according to the team’s General Manager, Ray Shero. This was followed up with word that Crosby had ceased all on-ice activities of his off-season training regime in Halifax. The latter was disputed by Crosby’s agent, who stated that it was “too early to tell” More >
Should Rules Governing Rookie Cards Be Changed?
Aug 23rd
By RGM81 aka Richard McAdam
It has happened to all of us, either directly or vicariously through watching someone break a box of the latest product. We have all experienced at one time or another that terrible feeling that creeps up the back of your head when you come to the
Three NHL Games and 5 RC’srealization that you have pulled a bunch of dud rookies from your break. While not every box break has an A-level pull like a Steven Stamkos or a Taylor Hall, there are just too many breaks where people pull nothing higher than a B-minus rookie More >
Does Gorges One-Year Contract Reveal Montreal’s Future Plans?
Jul 24th
By RGM81 aka Richard McAdam
The curious timing of the announcement that restricted free agent Josh Gorges had signed a one-year contract with the Canadiens may be something of an ominous sign for the young defenceman’s future with the club. To announce the signing of a popular player, both in the dressing room and among a core segment of the team’s fanbase, so late on a Friday night is hardly the pomp and circumstance one would expect. There’s likely to be no media availability with general manager Pierre Gauthier, and with Gorges himself in Kelowna, BC, at the Kelowna Rockets Alumni More >
