With teams having about ten games remaining, now appears to be a great time to look back on my early season predictions, see how badly I called this year’s NHL race to unfold, and make a few bold predictions as to what will happen between now and when Lord Stanley’s Mug is handed out.
My early season predictions for the Eastern Conference had a nice mix of accuracy, and being totally off base. Of the four teams I considered to be playoff locks, three of them are looking very good. Boston, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia are all in More >

Throughout the summer there have been sporadic updates on the condition of Sidney Crosby as he continues his rehabilitation from a devastating pair of concussions he received back in January. The news from the Pittsburgh Penguins that surfaced in early August is that Crosby is still experiencing “some recurrence of concussion symptoms,” according to the team’s General Manager, Ray Shero. This was followed up with word that Crosby had ceased all on-ice activities of his off-season training regime in Halifax. The latter was disputed by Crosby’s agent, who stated that it was “too early to tell” More >

It was just a little over a year ago that Sidney Crosby scored the goal of a generation, lifting Team Canada to a dramatic victory at the Vancouver Olympics. Here we go again. Another major star in the NHL goes down, due to a hit to the head, and the people at the NHL’s head office deem the hit okay, because there was no ‘intent’.Nope. You know what NHL? If you’d like to see an end to your star players ending up in the hospital then you need to do something. You need to make black and white rules. You More >

Ever since Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby and Washington’s Alexander Ovechkin simultaneously spectacularly burst onto the NHL scene in 2005-06, hockey fans have been divided over the question: who is better? For the past five years the two superstars have been dominant, racking up numerous individual awards, scoring tremendous highlight reel goals, and becoming the faces of their respective franchises. Discussions have often been spirited and passionate, whether on SCF’s Hockey Chat forum, pubs, or the water cooler. It is the Gretzky vs. Lemieux debate for a new generation.

When I first started collecting baseball cards as a kid back in the 1980s, it was because it was fun and my friends were collecting. We were able to go to the store, buy Topps baseball cards for 35 or 40 cents a pack, open the packs and brag about what players we got in them. My dad was OK with me collecting cards because he viewed sport cards as something that could increase in value over time. After all, he grew up in the 1950s and 1960s. During this time, kids bought packs of baseball More >
