The Local Card Store Question

Another one of those popular questions that gets asked of us but for some reason it came up several times this past week. Why have so many card shops closed over the years ? This has happened to stores of all sizes over the years and the answer is simple. LACK OF LOYALTY and GREED.
With the intrusion of Ebay, Amazon and other websites the card buyer doesn't have to leave his home to buy what he wants at prices that may be cheaper then what the local card store is willing to do. With flea market vendors and other hacks selling cards without any regard for honesty or building relationships the card buyer can get cards and roll the dice as to whether they are getting a deal or not. This is really a disappointing chain of events because regular card collectors who would support a local store are vastly out numbered by those looking to buy cheap and sell high to make a quick buck or two.

The local card store was where you came to buy your packs and boxes to build your set. Then you came in with your checklist and your doubles and traded for the cards you were missing or bought them. Nowadays the card collector is a fickle crowd dominated by speculators buying rookies, jerseys, autos and so forth of their favourite players and not interested in base set collecting. Strike one for the local card shop.

Strike two was the flea market venues popping up all over and vendors reeling the fish in. For these 'sellers' it was like shooting fish in a barrel. People were knowingly going to flea markets and getting fleeced of their own free will. Now the local card store had competition for the collector's buck because the same thing the store was selling the flea market vendor could sell. The flea market vendor could use his ABC Construction vendor permit to buy the product without a store and without paying sales tax. Of course the flea market guy could sell it cheaper because he paid next to nothing to sell his stuff, he had company write offs for more stuff and he didn't claim the income from the flea market on his income tax anyway.

The final death blow or strike three for the card store owner was the internet and the various vehicles the card collector could buy from. From Ebay to Amazon and everything in between plus online card stores that only exist in the internet world the actual brick and mortar card store was done like dinner. Upper Deck tried to help the real card store owner with their 'Brick & Mortar' program but it has proven to be not worth the paper it is printed on. Our local flea markets have Upper Deck hobby product the same week it comes out as do we. For the record Panini has done nothing to help the real card stores with any seller protection.

The bottom line is the buyers have created the mess that the hobby is in by not supporting their local card store. If the store owner was trustworthy, decent and not greedy why would you go looking to buy elsewhere ? Of course these are the same people who wonder where the local card store went.

For the record I have been in this hobby for over 35 years and opened my first card store in 1990. In June we will be closing our existing card store for the exact reasons I have detailed above :(:

P. K SUBBAN – For his uncanny ability to prove to his teammates that it IS all about him and playing shorthanded means more open ice...right?

The “WAIT...WHAT? THE PLAYOFFS STARTED?” award goes to...
THE VANCOUVER CANUCKS – For their failure to even show up against the Sharks...a whole lot of work to be done in B.C. this off-season....enough said.

The “TYSON NASH - PUNCH IN THE FACE CONTEST” award goes to...
OTTAWA AND MONTREAL – For their Game 2 melee that left more coaches and trainers on the bench than players to finish the game.

The “EDWARD E. NEWMAN – WHAT...ME WORRY?” award goes to...
LOS ANGELES KINGS – For spotting the Blues 2 games before showing the poise of defending champs by winning 4 straight to advance to round 2. No sweat...right?

The “THANK YOU KESSEL / TYLER CHANT” award goes to...
BOSTON BRUINS FANS – For...well...just because their version simply makes more sense than Toronto fans version.

The “ATTA-BOY” award goes to...

The “WE SPENT HOW MUCH?...FOR THAT?” award goes to....
MINNESOTA WILD – For their $200 million one and done playoff effort...ummmm...wow!

The “...GOTTA WEAR SHADES” award goes to...
NEW YORK ISLANDERS – For one hell of an effort gaining some valuable playoff experience...yes...the future is bright.

The “HOW THE HELL DID THAT HAPPEN” award goes to...
ST. LOUIS BLUES – For having the Kings on the ropes and then completely forgetting how to score...or finish. It’s a 60 minute game boys...just sayin’.

The “TRAIN KEPT-A-ROLLIN” award goes to...
CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS – For continuing to dominate everything in their path...wow...fun to watch!!

The “BIG DEAL...NO BIG DEAL” award goes to...
COREY PERRY – For showing up to sign that big contract and then not showing up for the post season laying goose eggs against the Wings. What was that noise?..Did someone step on a Duck?

The “I OWN A CANNON BUT I’M AFRAID TO USE IT” award goes to...
ZDENO CHARA – For consistently lobbing weak wristers at the net from the point and passing up the shot when he has the lane. Big Z...your slap shot scares the bejesus outta guys...use it!!! Jeez.

Sometimes the obvious needs stated because it isn't quite so obvious to some. Read on...

1. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is - This should be the way every trader approaches trading these days. SCF is easily the best trading site on the web simply because we have the largest membership of top-notch traders. However, it is naive to think that every single trader on any site is 100% trustworthy. If a new trader is offering you his $1000 sell value Adrian Peterson 1/1 auto for your $600 sell value Peyton Manning team logo auto /25 then you should be asking yourself why this guy is willing to take a $400 loss and not get caught up in the excitement of getting so much value for your card. If it seems too good to be true...

2. State what you are getting in the Trade Manager - This may seem like a no-brainer, but many, many people post trades in the Trade Manager with minimal information. If you post in the Trade Manager that you are to receive a "Jerry Rice GU" with no clarification of the year, brand or numbering, then when you are expecting to receive a Jerry Rice 3 color patch /10 and receive a single color jersey /250 it will be difficult to prove that you didn't get what was agreed upon. By simply taking the time to type in the year, brand and numbering you take a big step in protecting yourself.

3. Clear up the small details before agreeing to a trade - Don't assume that a trader will send within a certain time frame or packaged a certain way. SCF rules state that a 3 business day shipping time turnaround is required. If you agree to a trade on Friday and expect your trade partner to get their end shipped to you before Monday, clarify with them when they will be able to ship. If you expect a card to be shipped in a padded envelope, clarify that with your trade partner. No need to be rude or demanding, just simply say "I will be shipping in a padded envelope on Saturday, can you do the same?" and that will clear up a lot of questions and concerns that may arise.

Good luck and happy trading. Duane

The first game I went to this year was against the Pirates and I got Andrew McCutchen on a 2012 Topps card. A Charlie Nagy auto on a 1988 topps card. Then the next game I went to was against the Rockies and I got a career high for me! The first one I got was Ian Kennedy on a 2013 topps card. Then I got Wade Miley on a 2013 topps card I noticed the Rox were signing so I ran over there and got Jordan Pacheco on a 2013 tops card ran back to the dugout and got Didi Gregorius on a 2013 tops card and last but not least I got Gerrado Parra on 2 cards one from 2012 and the other from 2013.

Well, if someone had told me at the beginning of the month that Boston would have the best record in the MLB at the end of the month, I'd have thought that to be a rather good April Fools Day joke! But that's exactly where they are as we head into May. What a turnaround from last season. Here's hoping that they can keep this up as the season progresses!

Meanwhile, in Nashville, Michael & the Commodores went 14-2 this month to put their record at 39-6 going into the final month of their season. Michael went 24/62 (.387), scoring 12 runs while driving in 14 RBI & ended the month with an 8 game hitting streak. With only 11 games left to play in his Senior season, it's not looking promising on me getting down there to see him play & I ended up losing the only auction I found to add a new item of his for my PC this month.

This was a rather slow month for my PC, as I only made one trade on SCF at the very beginning of April for a pair of Carl's releases. The 2008 Donruss Legends Of Sport #80 & the 2010 Topps Blue Back #44.

Week #2 brought in the only new item of Mike's for the month, but it was one that I was really happy to finally get. It is an 8x10 black & white press photo of him in a White Sox uniform in which he appears to be leading off of first. This must have been from a exhibition game when he was playing for Birmingham as it is dated from 1986. I only wish that I could clearly make out the number on the uniform so I could find one for myself. I had been watching this particular item for several months as the seller kept relisting it for sale for nearly $30. My patience paid off as they posted it for under $10 & I snagged it right away!

The week also brought in an unexpected package from a very good friend that added the 1986 Red Sox Greats TCMA #9 card of Carl as well.

Week #3 brought in a rather puzzling pack of cards from an eBay win.

Now I have only seen these released for the Yankees & Red Sox & what makes this so mysterious is the cards that are inside. There are various releases from both 2007 & 2008 UD products including the 2007 SP Legendary Cuts & the 2007 Masterpieces sets. This may not sound like much, but the Legendary Cuts cards inside all have a silver foil around the player photo on the front instead of the gold. While the Masterpieces have a smooth glossy finish instead of the textured look & feel. After doing quite a bit of research on these, I cannot find any information as to why UD made these changes or how many of these were made this way. I did end up pulling the Yastrzemski from both of the sets from this one pack though, so I was extremely happy about that! If anyone can has any additional information on these packs or cards, please feel free to share!

The final week of the month brought in my most expensive purchase. An eBay auction win for a 1964 Topps Venezuelan League Leader card featuring Yaz, Kaline & Rollins. It's not perfect, as these rare releases never are, but for what it is, I think it's in really nice shape. Lord knows I've seen much worse from the Venezuelans!

As always, very special thanks go out to the following for helping me add to my PC this month:

silence7777777 - 2008 Donruss Legends Of Sport #80 & 2010 Topps Blue Back #44
BSEBALLCOMMISH75 - 1986 Red Sox Greats TCMA #9

eBay win #1 - 1986 8x10 black 7 white press photo of Mike Yastrzemski

eBay win #2 - 2008 UD Baseball Card Fan Pack Boston Red Sox Edition

eBay win #3 - 1964 Topps Venezuelan #8

SuperCollector status: Carl - 12.8%, Mike - 55.6%, Michael - 100%

That's all for this month!

Take care,
Kelly

Could you please cancel the transaction for the /card name/. I'll pay the $5 Shipping for the /card name/, which is still insanely high, but the only reason I bid on the /card name/ was because I figured it'd be free after the first $5.

You wanted $7.50 originally for shipping, which was obviously out of whack. I didn't agree with $5 much either really, but I let it go cause I know people just want to make an extra buck when they can. But come on man, you don't even use padded envelopes lol. $5-$7.50 shipping charges, and it cost you $1.12 to ship, in a cheap envelope that shouldn't be used for cards.

That's a joke.

I'm not going to leave you negative feedback, cause the cards did arrive and they seem to be in ok shape, it's Topps Chrome which has problems anyway. so it's harder to tell, but I am going to leave neutral feedback and draw attention to the shipping charges.

I recall you saying you were trying to avoid negative feedback, well man, you really are not doing yourself any favors by doing this with this shipping stuff.

Good luck in the future,
No one has had problems this far but I guess there's always someone looking to cause problems. Give me what feedback you want but you know, I didn't make you bid and I honestly didn't plan on those particular items to go that high in price but hey, I have no control over that. Sorry for all the problems but if I knew this woulda been that big of a deal, I woulda wrapped yer stuff in gold!! Can't satisfy everyone but at least I tried! Anyway, thanks again for the business!

Ps- I gave you good feedback even though you were difficult but you still knew the shipping charges before bidding but you still bid. And I was more than flexible with you about it.
Have a good one!

I'm not looking to cause problems. I'm giving honest feedback.
You're absolutely correct, you didn't make me bid. I did know the shipping charges yes, but not what they were for or how they were used. Now your buyers can see that you charge $5 shipping, but for no real reason other than to make a few more bucks. Not only do you charge ~4x the price of fair shipping, but you chose the cheap route and don't even use a padded envelope. That's a two-fold gouge. Knock it off.

If I had known this is what I was going to get for a $5 shipping charge I would have said something, or asked to cancel the transaction. It's my fault for assuming that people have standards. In all seriousness, why would you even be selling cards on eBay without having padded envelopes? I realize it may not be your forte, I see a lot of coin selling in your feedback history, but you should still know better than to put a card(s) in an oversized loose envelope lol. A worst case scenario is you could have gone to plenty of local stores and got a $0.69 padded envelope (and that's if you buy them single, from a drug store, which is the expensive way). The $5 shipping charge could have bought 7 of those. $7.50 would have bought 10. So why are you charging so much for shipping if not for things like that?

You tried, kind of, to satisfy me. With half truths, lol. You didn't lie, but you didn't give the whole truth either. Both are bad practices.
You knocked it down from $7.50 to $5 for the same $1.12 shipping lol.
If we actually went through with the $7.50 charge, you're damn right it'd be negative feedback lol.

It isn't denoted as negative, it's neutral. In my opinion it's informative. Now buyers will know to properly/thoroughly question your shipping before buying from you.

I have a football that I received from Fleer back in 2007. It was a "prize" from registering cardfs onto the site. This was one of many prizes/awards direct from Fleet. This is an autographed football from (i believe) 28 of the rookies from that year. I know that Adrian Peterson, Kevin Kolb, Brady Quinn, Joe Thomas, Jamarcus Russell, Marshawn Lynch, Calvin Johnson, Robert Meacham, Dwayne Bowe are just some of the sutographs on the ball.

I am unable to find a value on the ball so I am putting it at the mercy of the boards to decide approx value. Please be honest with what you believe it would be valued at. I am really not planning on keeping the ball, but actually placed it on the boards to see what offers are given. If I do get an offer that I like, I will let it go.

You can PM me if you are interested in this ball. Prefer to sell but may consider trade.

All the bragging about a double rookie crop in 2013-14 thanks to the lockout/strike has claimed its first victim. Those who thought that things would go on as if nothing happened next season are being proven wrong. I just saw the pre-order prices for 2013-14 SCORE HOCKEY and to say I had to check the prices three times is not a lie. A 2012-13 hobby box with 36 packs which we sold for $28 this past year will now cost almost $60 !! This is a disgrace to card collectors everywhere and stinks much like the 2012-13 O-Pee-Chee hockey. When Upper Deck abandoned its VICTORY hockey product leaving base collectors with only SCORE hockey from Panini as a buck a pack product I thought this was a tactical mistake by Upper Deck. Now SCORE will rival O-Pee-Chee (if it comes out again) for price point and leave no buck a pack product in hockey. Simply put this is nothing but greed on behalf of the card companies to try to recover what they lost this past season and make us collectors fill their pockets. This hobby never ceases to amaze with the greedy lengths it will go too. Yes I am angry :mad2:
