General discussion on sports and assorted other matters.

  1. If you didn't complain before, why start now?: Talk radio wastes airspace again!

    The following was previously published on one of my other blogs:
    ========================================
    There's a reason why New York Daily News sports media columnist Bob Raissman refers to sports talk radio and its attendant audience as "The Valley of the Stupid". The perception being that listeners---and sometimes the hosts themselves---are ill-informed on certain topics, and when the hosts pass off their personal opinions as, well, gospel, to the audience, then things ...

  2. Injuries and contenders: Not a good mix

    In the course of the last few days, four likely playoff teams have taken devastating hits via injury. The timing couldn't be any worse, with Opening Day 11 days away as I write (unless you're a Dodgers or Diamondabacks fan, and those teams open play Down Under in Australia on Saturday).

    The defending NL East champion Atlanta Braves have lost two of their starting pitchers, Kris Medlen & Brandon Beachy, both of whom require Tommy John surgery for the 2nd time. Medlen was injured ...

  3. Will UAlbany ever get any respect from the NCAA?

    The following was previously published on one of my other blogs:
    ==========================================
    You're a 4-time America East men's basketball champion, with all four titles coming in the last nine years. You haven't gotten very far in any previous tournament appearance. So when Selection Sunday comes, how does the NCAA reward you for your 4th league title?

    If you are the Great Danes of the University at Albany, you go to Dayton, Ohio to play a "play-in" ...

  4. Wanted: A sports agent who isn't greedy

    The biggest problem in pro sports, particularly the big 3 (baseball, football, basketball) isn't what's on the field of play, but off it. No, I don't mean the use of PED's and other drugs, or any of that other stuff. I refer to the bane of every average fan's existence as a consumer. The sports agent.

    There are so few agents who can honestly say they've played the game. Former New England Patriot Randy Vataha comes to mind, as he earned an agent's license a few years back. The most ...

  5. New England doesn't belong in the playoffs this year after screwing Denver

    The New England Patriots lost my respect after the infamous "tuck rule game" in the playoffs vs. Oakland more than a decade ago. It didn't help that they got off with what amounted to a slap on the wrist five years later for "Spygate" vs. the Jets.

    One week ago, the Pats lost to Carolina when the referees decided to pick up a penalty flag on the last play, when they had a case to call defensive holding or pass interference on the Panthers. Had the game been played ...
