Collecting Yastrzemski...September, 2012

Rate this Entry
Well, my birthday month was pretty good if I do say so myself, and even though I didn't get as many new Yastrzemski cards as the number of years I've been alive, I was still rather happy with the results. That would be 41 for those that are wondering! Early in the month, I learned about a rare public appearance that Carl is making over in Burlington, MA in November & that got me thinking about making a road trip, but I'll get into that a little later. My first trade of the month brought in one of Carl's earlier issues that I had felt I had put off getting for far too long. It may not be in perfect condition, but I have never let the worn look stop me before & with the wood border of the '62 Topps release I think it adds character to the card. My birthday week didn't bring any trades on the site, but a few auction wins did yield a couple of Carl's oddball releases & one of Mike's minor league sets from his years with Durham.

The third week of the month was overrun by my work schedule which didn't allow for any trades or purchases. Somehow spending 15 hours of my day driving back & forth along with my 12 hour shifts just really puts a damper on my collecting. It does, however make for really nice paychecks to be able to spend a little more the following week! And that's exactly what I did, making three purchases here on SCF for eight new additions to the PC as well as picking up some tradebait for one that is in the mix. Also won two auctions on eBay, one of which was the base card from 2012 Topps Triple Threads that I ended up getting for only a quarter! Gotta love that! That final week also brought news of Michaels return to the Vanderbilt lineup for the first week of Fall Ball!

That brings us to the final weekend of the month. In which I get this PM from the Commish telling me that he desperately needs to get ahold of me. So I send him my cell number & await his call. It was to inform me about the upcoming signing appearance from Carl. I told you I was going to get back to this! Well, we spoke during my entire trip up to work, except for the nasty dead zone that I pass through, but we continued the conversation afterwards. His idea for me was to take a couple days off work, drive up to Michigan to pick him up, then make the 14 hour trip to Massachusetts. Did I mention this was in November??? Well, needless to say, I stewed about it all night at work & on the drive back home. When I get there, I tell my wife about the idea & how crazy it is & the first thing out of her mouth is....."Well, why don't you go?" If I haven't said it before, I'll say it now..."I really love my wife!" So, I call the Commish back to let him know that the trip is on! But, not so fast.....after checking his schedule, it turns out that he already has prior commitments that he just can't get out of! How's that for karma??? He stirs the pot & sets this plan in motion & then can't reap the rewards! Now, I just need to save up the money for the trip in a month & a half!
