Collecting Yastrzemski - April, 2013

Rate this Entry
Well, if someone had told me at the beginning of the month that Boston would have the best record in the MLB at the end of the month, I'd have thought that to be a rather good April Fools Day joke! But that's exactly where they are as we head into May. What a turnaround from last season. Here's hoping that they can keep this up as the season progresses!

Meanwhile, in Nashville, Michael & the Commodores went 14-2 this month to put their record at 39-6 going into the final month of their season. Michael went 24/62 (.387), scoring 12 runs while driving in 14 RBI & ended the month with an 8 game hitting streak. With only 11 games left to play in his Senior season, it's not looking promising on me getting down there to see him play & I ended up losing the only auction I found to add a new item of his for my PC this month.

This was a rather slow month for my PC, as I only made one trade on SCF at the very beginning of April for a pair of Carl's releases. The 2008 Donruss Legends Of Sport #80 & the 2010 Topps Blue Back #44.

Week #2 brought in the only new item of Mike's for the month, but it was one that I was really happy to finally get. It is an 8x10 black & white press photo of him in a White Sox uniform in which he appears to be leading off of first. This must have been from a exhibition game when he was playing for Birmingham as it is dated from 1986. I only wish that I could clearly make out the number on the uniform so I could find one for myself. I had been watching this particular item for several months as the seller kept relisting it for sale for nearly $30. My patience paid off as they posted it for under $10 & I snagged it right away!

The week also brought in an unexpected package from a very good friend that added the 1986 Red Sox Greats TCMA #9 card of Carl as well.

Week #3 brought in a rather puzzling pack of cards from an eBay win.

Now I have only seen these released for the Yankees & Red Sox & what makes this so mysterious is the cards that are inside. There are various releases from both 2007 & 2008 UD products including the 2007 SP Legendary Cuts & the 2007 Masterpieces sets. This may not sound like much, but the Legendary Cuts cards inside all have a silver foil around the player photo on the front instead of the gold. While the Masterpieces have a smooth glossy finish instead of the textured look & feel. After doing quite a bit of research on these, I cannot find any information as to why UD made these changes or how many of these were made this way. I did end up pulling the Yastrzemski from both of the sets from this one pack though, so I was extremely happy about that! If anyone has any additional information on these packs or cards, please feel free to share!

The final week of the month brought in my most expensive purchase. An eBay auction win for a 1964 Topps Venezuelan League Leader card featuring Yaz, Kaline & Rollins. It's not perfect, as these rare releases never are, but for what it is, I think it's in really nice shape. Lord knows I've seen much worse from the Venezuelans!

As always, very special thanks go out to the following for helping me add to my PC this month:

silence7777777 - 2008 Donruss Legends Of Sport #80 & 2010 Topps Blue Back #44
BSEBALLCOMMISH75 - 1986 Red Sox Greats TCMA #9

eBay win #1 - 1986 8x10 black & white press photo of Mike Yastrzemski

eBay win #2 - 2008 UD Baseball Card Fan Pack Boston Red Sox Edition

eBay win #3 - 1964 Topps Venezuelan #8

SuperCollector status: Carl - 12.8%, Mike - 55.6%, Michael - 100%

That's all for this month!

Take care,
Kelly
