Collecting Yastrzemski - May, 2013

Rate this Entry
May was an exciting month to be a Yastrzemski fan! Vanderbilt's regular season came to a close this month, but not before the Commodores achieved not only their best record in school history (48-7), but they also set a new SEC wins record by going 26-3. Michael led the team in the SEC games this season batting .407 (.333 - for the season). He also joined fellow teammate, Tony Kemp, by being selected to the All-SEC first team & All-Defensive team. Here's hoping that they can win it all in Omaha! At the time of this posting they are up 5-4 in the 5th thanks to Michael's 2-RBI double & scoring the go ahead run from a SH from Conrad Gregor! I can't wait to see how the young Yaz does in the draft this year! Between that & the fact that the Red Sox are still in first place in the AL East, it's been a really good month!

Anyway, on to the new additions to my PC this month! Unfortunately, I didn't make a single trade this month on SCF, which hasn't happened since my return to the hobby back in October, 2011. Not to worry though, I did make a few purchases off the Bay!

There was a distinct pattern this month as far as my spending went, with the first purchase being the cheapest on my pocketbook & steadily increasing. To start it off, I picked up the 2012 Panini Golden Age card of Carl for a whopping $0.21 with free shipping! There was a little scare as the tracking number that they provided was for a different item that they sold, but the card did eventually arrive safe & sound.

The second was a nice little oddball from Monarch Corona Printing that they produced in 2012. Only 200 of these little beauties were created, with one of the single card auctions reaching $51.67. Fortunately for me I didn't get into that bidding war & picked mine up for a much more modest $2.99 with free shipping.

My next purchase brought in the only addition to my PC of Mike Yastrzemski this month. His first card from his minor league career out of the 1984 TCMA Durham Bulls team set. Which I picked up the entire set for under $10. This was also the last card purchase of the month for me as well.

About midway through May I found a sweet deal on a lot of 5 sports magazines all depicting Carl on the covers from 1964-1982. Got them all for $10 with free shipping! This one is my favorite of the lot, probably because of the title, "The Old Masters".

The final purchase was of the 1964 Red Sox Team Issue 7x9 of Carl. It has a pinhole at the top & some residue from being in someone's old photo album, but for under $12 delivered I can't complain. It's not like these are all that easy to come by anymore.

So basically, for under the cost of 2 retail boxes from the local Walmart which would've yielded me probably nothing for my PC, I think I did rather well surfing the Bay this month!

SuperCollector status: Carl - 12.9%, Mike - 66.7%, Michael - 100%

That's it for this month!

Take care,
Kelly

I have a 1960 Yaz, and it is in pretty good condition, am considering getting is graded and puting up for auction considering someone paid 83k for one last year. Am interested to find out just what kind of grade mine will get. I traded a Ricky Henderson rookie for it straight up in 1990. Kind of been holding on to it as a special have. Wish I could tell ya am interested in selling but............Rob

Nice card to have Rob! I've had the 1960 Topps #148 in my PC since 1976. It was the card that started my PC. I actually submitted mine for grading at the end of 2011. It only got a 6.5 from BVG, but I didn't care. I did it more for the protection value of Beckett's cases than anything. I was so nervous about submitting it, it was kinda like the feeling I got when any of my kids leave home! Good luck with it, if you end up sending it in to get graded!
