Collecting Yastrzemski - September, 2013

Rate this Entry
Well, the 2013 MLB regular season is over & if you'd have told me six months ago that the Red Sox would not only make the postseason, but have the best record in the American League, I'd have called you a dreamer. But here we are & that's exactly where we stand going from worst to first just like they did back when Carl & the '67 Sox had their Impossible Dream season. Of course, sitting right across from them in the National League with the exact same record is the St. Louis Cardinals, which could set the stage for a serious case of deja vu. I just hope 2013 will be more favorable for Boston.

And while the month of my 42nd birthday may not have brought in many new pieces to add to my collection, it did see a "first" for me, but I'll get to that here in a little bit.

The month started off great as my wife & kids treated me to a baseball game where the Fort Wayne Tincaps took on the Bowling Green Hot Rods & won the Midwest League Quarterfinals Series! Before the game my daughter sweet-talked one of the Hot Rods pitchers for a bp ball & then proceeded to get it signed by a couple of the Tincaps players, Diego Goris & Mallex Smith.

Of course she didn't stop there, she sweet-talked the players into letting her get back to the bullpen where former MLB player, Burt Hooten, was getting his pitchers ready for the game & got him to sign the ball too!

Of course the best part was getting to enjoy the game with the most important people in my life!

After watching the game & the fireworks that followed, I finally got to take a well deserved break from work, getting 10 days off to celebrate not only my birthday, but my 20th wedding anniversary as well. But, enough about that & on to this months acquisitions...

I did find a great deal while surfing the "Bay" this month & I picked this little beauty up for under a buck!

I believe this was actually an SGA from his final game in Boston. $.99 for a 30 year old pennant complete with the original 5x7 photo still intact was definitely a win for my PC! Unfortunately, this was my only auction win of the month.

The next piece came as such as surprise that I still can't believe it fell into my lap the way it did. While attending the minor league game earlier in the month, we visited the teams gift shop & saw all of the different merchandise there & it got me to thinking about what items Aberdeen might available to buy that aren't listed on their website. So I sent several emails to Aberdeen & finally got in contact with someone there to see what all they had. I asked about everything I could think of, programs, yearbooks, media guides, cracked bats, jerseys, etc. For every email I sent I hit a brick wall. Since there season was over everything was already gone. I was informed that any game used item of his went the same day it was made available. I was really bummed out. I thanked them in each & every email for their time & for trying to help me.

A few days later I get a surprise email back from my contact there. I was informed that they did indeed have a piece of Michaels that had been forgotten about. During the 4th of July day game, they wore caps with a stars & stripes logo on it. They were all auctioned off after the game & the payment for the cap that Michael wore didn't go through so it never got shipped. It was then offered to me for less than what the bidding started at, so I jumped on it.

The best part was that it actually showed up on my birthday! Not only did I add one more autographed piece to my collection, but my first game used piece! With any luck this will not be the last!

I also did make one trade here on SCF during the month with a very good friend. I was able to knock off a few cards from his wantlist & he sent me a piece from his own collection.

I just love unexpected surprises! I say that because he never ends up telling me what he is sending, but he never fails to please!

I was also given one more reason to want to make a road trip to Boston this month as the Red Sox finally immortalized Carl outside of Fenway with a bronze statue of him outside.

I only wish I could've been there with Dewey, Yaz & Jim!

The only thing that I was hoping to report this month that I didn't get to was my official SuperCollector status here on SCF. For anyone that has been following my blog entries on here might know, I finally hit the percentage of cards needed to apply for SuperCollector. They must either have been really busy this month or my application got lost somewhere as I never heard back from anyone about it. I even inquired a few weeks in & still got no response. Perhaps I'll try my hand at applying for the Memorabilia SuperCollector now that I have my first piece of game used memorabilia.

My percentage actually dropped a point this month as I didn't add any new cards to my PC but several were added to the checklist in the Inventory Manager. Here is where I stand:
SuperCollector status: Carl - 15%, Mike - 77.8%, Michael - 100%

Special Thanks go out to the following for helping me add to my PC this month:

BSEBALLCOMMISH75 - 2010 Sports Collector's Digest magazine with Carl on the cover

Well, that's it for this month!

Take care,
Kelly
