Don't cry for the Jets-----yet

I found it amusing that an online commentator suggested that the Jets would try to sign Rex Grossman to back up Ryan Fitzpatrick, rather than give rookie Bryce Petty (out of Baylor), a shot, with Geno Smith gone until October due to a broken jaw.
What is it with some of these alleged geniuses throwing shade on the Jets before the first pre-season game??
Grossman hasn't played in, what, nearly 4 years? He was schizophrenic, based on the comments from sportswriters who covered him in Chicago and Washington. One good game, followed by 2-3 bad ones in a row. And would he be comfortable competing with another Baylor QB in training camp? You do know that Petty took over at Baylor after Robert Griffin III graduated, right? The Jets are better off giving Michael Vick another chance, before Rex Ryan scoops him up and brings him to Buffalo.
The AFC East figures to be one of the toughest divisions in the NFL this year, especially with all the moves Ryan and the Pegulas made in Buffalo. However, if recent history is any barometer, either in the NFL or MLB, breaking the bank to upgrade the team doesn't guarantee instant success. The Bills, Dolphins, & Jets all made moves designed to break New England's stranglehold on the division title, but the Jets, the Keystone Kops of the division, if you will, have every move microanalyzed because they play in the biggest media center in the league. Some folks are snickering that Smith's injury is a boon for "Gang Green", and, maybe, it will be. He was thrust into the starting role too quickly, due largely to Mark Sanchez going on IR 2 years ago in the preseason. Now, he'll have to carry a clipboard while he recovers.
I'm already penciling the Jets in to finish out of the playoff picture----again, but won't make a final decision until I see them play a preseason game. I just see Buffalo & Miami having the best chance to unseat New England, if at all possible. That being said, I'd rather they give Petty a chance to prove himself. We've seen him light up the scoreboard in college, playing in one of the toughest leagues in the NCAA. Of course, some said the same thing about Geno Smith 2 years ago coming out of West Virginia. Smith was rushed, and struggled.
Bottom line: The Jets don't need another quarterback. Petty & Fitzpatrick should be enough. For now.
