Greed and Deceit

Rate this Entry
After talking to a new client the other day and telling him our story of forty years in the hobby he asked what stands out the most about the hobby. I said without hesitation that the amount of greed and deceit in the hobby is terrible. The hobby has been infiltrated by greedy people not collectors and we have seen deceit in epidemic proportions. Now we have 'scammers lists' and 'blocked buyers' lists, heck we even started tracking people we don't want to deal with.

It was a lengthy discussion and at times it bordered on me ranting but for a new guy wanting into the hobby when he asked me if it was worth it I had a hard time saying yes. I mean honestly, over the years I've seen more bad than good.Between the outrageous prices from both card company and from money hungry sellers and the low lifes who lie and cheat buyers out of their money and never send the item there is a lot of not so nice aspects to the hobby. We haven't even talked about the actions of the card companies which aren't the most above board and honest.

Is there anything positive, sure. You find some honest sellers, some genuine collectors who are eager to share and some just plain nice guys. The problem is the numbers and the fact that five nice interactions can be totally wiped out by one lousy deal.

I hope that you all have great transactions and pull that magical card that makes you go wow.

Happy collecting.
