Voice of the 'Fan

On January 3, WWE CEO/Chairman Vince McMahon, who plays the part of a prematurely senile, deranged executive on TV, was breaking bread with another unpopular senior citizen, Dallas Cowboys owner/president/GM Jerry Jones, at AT&T-Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, site of WrestleMania 32, three months from now. McMahon, along with daughter Stephanie and son-in-law Paul Levesque (aka Triple H), was in town to promote the "Show of Shows", and watched the Dallas-Washington game in Jones' box.

In all honesty, Jones & McMahon have a few things in common. Both are more stubborn than a pack of mules. Consider that Jones refuses to hire a separate GM to handle football decisions. He thinks he knows what's best for his team. Hasn't won a Super Bowl in 20 years and counting. The fans want him to cut back on his burdens, but he won't do it. It's clear, considering the Cowboys didn't have an adequate backup after Tony "Arts & Crafts" Romo went down in September, that Jones is out of touch with the game.

The on-screen persona of McMahon, now 70, has been in "declining mental health", shall we say, for more than a decade, but he refuses to cede control of the company to his daughter & son-in-law, the latter of whom, casting aside his own heel persona, has done wonders with the developmental program, NXT, but can't work that same magic with the big club, forced, for all intents & purposes, along with Stephanie, to be puppets subservient to the old man. While Vince is surprisingly fit for his age, he, too, has lost touch with his fan base, but he doesn't care. He prefers to have WWE exist in a bubble universe where his persona is stuck in the Attitude Era (1997-2004), unwilling to move forward in time.

In a perfect world, and I assume she is legitimately concerned about her father's mental health, Stephanie should've taken her father aside and told him straight up that the best place for him in the here & now would be to remain at home, bouncing his six grandchildren (Steph's 3 and Shane's 3) off his knees and telling them bedtime stories, even if his narrative is still as bad as it's always been. Vince's stubborn streak, in this writer's opinion, drove son Shane away six years ago, and, in truth, Shane is better by being away from the nonsense.

Jones & McMahon would have one more kindred spirit to bond with, and that is GOP Presidential candidate and professional bloviator Donald Trump. He's a few months younger than McMahon, but is showing some of the same traits. Stubbornly refuses to back off his controversial comments over the last several months on various topics, and any humorist worth his salt would consider linking these three geriatrics together.

Can you picture either Jones or McMahon as Trump's running mate? I can, with the other in a Cabinet position. Let's say Vince decides to run, after being asked by his pal Trump. After wife Linda failed to win a Senate seat in 2 tries (2010, 2012), maybe the old nut, who sabotaged that first run with an ill-advised attempt at comedy on the air the night before the election, thinks he can succeed where she failed. Jones would then by Secretary of the Interior or something that would involve money. Press secretary would be Stephen A. Smith (ESPN), and we'd get Alec Baldwin and Rosie O'Donnell in there somewhere, too.

The bottom line? In all seriousness, Jones, McMahon, and Trump need to embrace one thing together. Reality. Before it's too late.
