Retirement isn't forever

So Brett Favre won his first game with the Minnesota Vikings. Big freakin' whoop! You and I know that if last year with the NY Jets was any indication, Favre will flame out sometime around Thanksgiving, the Vikings will go 0-December, miss the playoffs, and we'll have to go through the whole soap opera all over again about whether or not Brett wants to come back, this time to play out the final year of his Vikings deal.

That makes him no different than any number of boxers and wrestlers who've done the same thing over the years, which brings us to Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan.

Start with Flair. Less than 18 months after being enshrined in the WWE's self-indulgent Hall of Fame, then losing what was supposed to be his final match at Wrestlemania 24, the "Nature Boy" signed a 3-year deal with Hogan's fledgling Hulkamania promotion. For Flair, it isn't about basking in the spotlight again. It's more about getting back on his feet financially. Since his retirement, Flair has had a finance company collapse under him. His 3rd wife, Tiffany, filed for divorce. A planned appearance on a CBS reality show never happened because the show was cancelled after 1 week before he could go on. He's made spot appearances for Ring of Honor & WWE in recent months, and there were rumors that he would be named GM of Monday Night Raw, but then they decided to go the guest host route, a la "Saturday Night Live".

Hogan has forged a new career as a reality TV star, just to keep himself in the mainstream. "Hogan Knows Best", played to death on VH1 since its inception, turned the personal life of the former champion into a trainwreck. Wife Linda filed for divorce, and both she & Hulk are seeing younger people. Hogan knows that "Knows Best" is just about done, if it isn't already, and despite the fact that his Celebrity Championship Wrestling failed to catch fire last year, he's not ready to walk away from the bright lights just yet. He's better off, though, if he did.

Part of the deal will have Flair & Hogan co-starring in yet another reality show, which reunites Flair with old nemesis and employer Eric Bischoff, who has also made a second career in reality TV. That has trainwreck written all over it, I'm certain. Hulkamania, so far, hasn't scheduled any American tour dates, and will go to Australia in November. Hmmmm. You don't suppose Hogan's trying to avoid a conflict with Vince McMahon, do you?

For Flair & Hogan, this is definitely the last roundup. They may not admit it, but with both of them near the point of collecting Social Security.......!

Brett Favre has his endorsement deals with Proctor & Gamble (Prilosec) and Wrangler, which can keep him busy even if he can't play anymore. If anything were to happen to either Flair or Hogan while overseas, it would prove that they were better off going gently into the good night once and for all.
