But if you know the story of Senators head coach Paul MacLean, you know never to count him out. Just go back to his junior days, when he played across the Ottawa River for the Hull Olympiques (now the Gatineau Olympiques). He always found a way to stick.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates are wearing Penguins hockey jerseys on their road trip to Milwaukee and Detroit that begins with a flight tonight, but infielder Brandon Inge might have trouble getting through airport security.

Inge took the support for the city's NHL team, which leads its playoff series with Ottawa 3-1, to an extreme before today's game when he entered the clubhouse in a Mario Lemieux jersey – plus full hockey gear and on rollerblades.

He toured the clubhouse – finding the carpet there much more difficult to handle on wheels than the cement floor of the stadium tunnel – and training room before heading to the players' lounge.

With the first overall pick, the Minnesota Wild is pleased and proud to select...

Ha! We can dream.

Most likely going to be the first overall pick, Seth Jones was fourth in WHL defenseman scoring with 56 points in 61 games. He was Portland's #1 defenseman and was just rock solid defensively. He also starred on Team USA during the World Junior Championships scoring 7 points in 7 games, winning the gold medal.

There really isn't Jones doesn't have. He has size and strength, he is a rock defensively, make strong breakout passes, can play both physical or finesse game; he can do it all.

TEMPE, Ariz. -- No one said life on top was easy ... especially when dealing with college kids.
Now that the Arizona State hockey team has shown that their ascent to the elite of the ACHA is fact, not fad, the principle challenges facing Sun Devil head coach Greg Powers and his program have evolved to reflect that change in status.
“We absolutely have the target on our backs,” Powers said. “We can’t hide how talented we are. We can’t hide how deep we are. Everyone knows it. Everyone is out to get us. Every time we play someone, we’re going to get their best effort. Last season, that was our biggest challenge. It was a bit of a growing pain, as a coach, knowing that we were going to get everyone’s best effort. But you’re dealing with kids. To maintain that level of focus to win at a high level is tough to do."

5/20/2013 9:58:00 AM
The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced that they have signed defenseman Nick D'Agostino to a two-year entry level contract. D'Agostino recently finished a successful four-year career with the Big Red, where he was one of the top offensive defensemen in ECAC Hockey with 25 goals and 47 assists for 72 points over 132 games.

D'Agostino was drafted by the Penguins in the seventh round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft with the 211th pick, then made an immediate impact upon his arrival with the Big Red. In 2010, he was named to the league's All-Rookie Team and presented the program's Greg Ratushny Award as most promising freshman. He was then the team's leading scorer among defensemen as both a sophomore and junior, earning All-Ivy League and All-ECAC Hockey Second Team honors in 2012.

D'Agostino is a two-time winner of the Wendell and Francelia Earle Award for his class' leading member for outstanding academic achievement. After serving as an assistant captain as a junior, he was one of the Big Red's tri-captains this season.

D'Agostino's contract with the Penguins begins with the 2013-14 season. He is the first member of Cornell's Class of 2013 to sign an NHL contract, and the second to sign a professional deal (forward Greg Miller signed with the American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers in April).

It's Stanley Cup playoff time, and, despite the shortened season, hockey is at the top of its game, according to NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

"We've had a different Stanley Cup champion each of the last eight years," Bettman told CNBC Friday. "We have a game now that probably has the best competitive balance in all of sports."

The compelling team story lines are also helping to drive television ratings. The playoffs include a New York-Boston matchup that has not been seen in 40 years, and the remaining eight teams comprise a Canadian squad (the Ottawa Senators) and the defending champion Los Angeles Kings.

It’s Stephen White’s job to call the action as a hockey announcer for ATC Productions, which covers the Australian Ice Hockey League.
Little did he know he would be calling it in a dramatically different way when an on-ice official was accidentally injured.
In the first period of a game between the Newcastle North Stars and Melbourne Ice on Sunday, linesman Casper Russelhuber was crunched by two players, receiving an accidental spin-kick from Chris Frank of the Ice that lacerated his index finger.
Along with the sliced digit, he suffered a mild concussion. You can see the injury at the 53-second mark here:
