When Panini America‘s sophomore release of Golden Age baseball cards arrives later this month it will include not only the first cards of the original Bad News Bears.

It also will include one of the biggest stars of the 1970s as well as a memorabilia card from one of the biggest disasters of the 1930s.

The star is John Belushi and the disaster is the Hindenburg — and they’ll both be found in packs of cards as Golden Age includes an eclectic mix of sports, pop culture and more.

While a final checklist for Golden Age has not yet been released, Panini teased a gallery of its inclusions on Monday. Among them were cards for the Saturday Night Live, Animal House and Blues Brothers star who died of a drug overdose in 1982. Belushi has appeared on a handful of trading cards in the past with just two cut autographs and no previous memorabilia cards in the Beckett.com database. Most of his appearances came in 2011 when Topps included him in its American Pie set, which also examined pop culture like Golden Age does.

Golden Age also will include cards for Bigfoot, Buckwheat, Bob Hope, Bo Derek and more when it arrives next Wednesday.

I've been reading all kinds of articles on and offline about the reasons for the decline in all things card trading, and most agree that it's due to the mass production seen in the mid 80's to late 90's. That's just one out of many reasons I saw on countless articles, blogs, and forums across the board. There is one point that I noticed wasn't pointed out. Now, maybe I'm wrong and completely out of my mind on this one, but just hear me out.

As a child, I remember receiving my regular subscription to Sports Illustrated for Kids in the mail ... inside would be two or three pages of nine perforated cards; I think there were 27 or so total. I would rip these cards out and store them in an old shoebox. Every once in a while, I'd take the box from underneath my bed and just look at the treasures I had found. Somehow, I started thinking about this, I really don't know why. Anyway, after reminiscing about the times passed, I got to thinking.

I think one of the biggest reasons why this hobby is declining is simple, the kids - which were the biggest reason for profit, seem to have been taken out of the equation. Now, I'm not an old guy with tons of experience, but I remember cards being a lot cheaper when I was a kid. I don't know how much for sure, but I remember buying packs upon packs of cards with my measly allowance.

Other things I've noticed that may have killed kids buying cards (through my own eyes, not the internet's vast amount of knowledge)

- Cards are hard to understand - With so many SPs, parallels, inserts, etc, it's hard to keep up. I got back into the hobby after years and years away from it, and I must say, there are way too many things to keep track of. If I was a kid, I may have spent one weeks' allowance on a couple packs of cards and that would've been it. After seeing five cards in white borders, one card in a blue border, and one card covered in gold, it would've driven me nuts. Even while getting back into the hobby, I had no idea what the heck a parallel card was. I still remember putting all the cards, regardless of color, inside a binder. Then, after buying a few packs, I finally saw that there were plain versions of those cards, thus finding out the whole parallel thing. Add to all this, there's also the infinite amount of brands, series, and other cards, it's just plain confusing. Going to Target and looking at the card isle trying to find the newest series of Topps is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

- A definite generation gap - Kids now are all about technology. With the newest game platform coming out or some premiere of their favorite Cartoon Network show, there's no time for paper-cuts. Kids would also rather spend three hours in line waiting for some video game then spend five minutes in a card shop. I know this sounds cliche, but I blame the parents. I remember my dad picking up a pack of cards or two on his way home from work. I'd love the surprise and opening the cards with him was a great time. The look on his face when I found something cool (not worth anything, just cool - something about the card ... The way the scoreboard was blurry in the background, one of my favorite players was on the mound, anything else that may have caught my eye). He'd immediately ask, "What'd you get?!" I'd tell him, and then he would go on talking about one of his childhood trading card memories. I started to notice that, towards the end of my childhood, I lost my way with my father. I spent time with friends, watched tv, and just never made time for that. I then went in the military, and the only thing I remembered overseas was looking at cards with my dad - not my friends or a tv show, but something as simple as looking at a bunch of 10 cent cardboard.

- No more brick and mortar stores - Okay, so maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit, but theyre not as abundant as they once were. There used to be one within walking distance of almost every kids house. I know the cause of this, and it relates to the point I made above. Kids helped grow the hobby and kids are helping to kill it. With things like eBay and other online sites, collectors are making it expensive for kids to buy cards. Collectors are busy trying to find the next Honus Wagner and because of that, kids can no longer purchase a simple pack of cards. People used to find cards and save them, no they're like a miniature stock market wrapped in foil. As soon as I guy finds a card, he throws it into a top-loader and shoves it into an online auction. This also makes it hard for kids to get the cards they need - you have to be 18 or older, and have money to purchase cards.

So, now that I got that out of the way, I have a solution ... it's probably a stupid idea, as no one else has done it, and by now, I'm sure someone would've. I just wanted to see if anybody knows why this hasn't or isn't happening.

A magazine - yup, that's it, 60 pages of paper bound together and delivered monthly. The magazine would be cheap, center mostly on TRADING (not just sports), and could include the following with each edition:

-An article about any professional team.
-A player interview (to help make it even better for the kids, allow a winner from the previous month to conduct this interview)
-Some simple information - nothing hard to understand, but something to keep a kids attention for five minutes. This article might teach the kid the difference between Batting Average and On-Base Percentage, how wind affects a field goal kick, or what causes a technical foul.
-And here's the big one - A free pack of cards. Maybe once or twice a year, the magazine company could include a pack of cards - current cards. It's sick to say this, but it would be like a drug dealer giving a man his first hit for free and getting him addicted, or getting a fish on the line and hoping the hook sets. This is where I think it would payoff. The kid would get the cards included in the magazine, and maybe read an article in the magazine about finishing a set or how to trade cards with friends.

I think, if we put the hobby in the kids' hands, it might actually take back off. Does anyone know why no one has done this? Maybe I'm completely wrong and there actually is a magazine like this. Is there?

Thanks for reading - sorry, I have a problem summarizing.
Justin

If you’re looking to replace an outstanding redemption with Topps, collectors will have to wait at least another month.

After several mentions about it on Twitter and a blog post, collectors said they were told replacing redemptions at Topps was currently put on hold. This was confirmed after calling Topps’ customer service line this morning.

Replacements are still being handled under normal conditions, the customer service rep said. If autographs come in for a specific redemption, those will go out as normal.
