Panini America officials raised more than a few eyebrows when they announced in early March the addition of 2012-13 Brilliance Basketball to the NBA product roster. But for the product itself, they raised a lot more than than that.

By incorporating some good, old-fashioned embossing, mirror board stock and intricate design and type treatments, Panini America’s creative folks delivered a set with differences that you can see and feel. As a result, perhaps the true brilliance of Brilliance is not so much the set’s autograph and memorabilia content (which is quite stellar) as it is the raised-relief effect that shines on every card.

I was sorting through my collection, when I stumbled across a card I pulled 12 years ago. It is a 2001-2002 Fleer Maximum Shane Battier "True Colors" RC /1500. However, when I went to look it up online, it was not listed. According to the checklist, only the "Home White" version of Shane Battier was part of the set. Anyone have any idea about this?

When it comes to the heart of the 2012-13 NBA collecting season, well, we're smack dab in the middle of it right now. Past & Present released last week, with both Momentum and Brilliance coming hot on its heels. After that? None other than perennial product-of-the-year front-runner Gold Standard.

Over the next several days, we'll share several captivating looks at both Momentum and Brilliance. Today, however, we're going for the gold. Inspired by last night's scorching action in the NBA Playoffs between Chicago and Miami and Golden State and San Antonio, we ventured back to the Panini America Acquisitions vault earlier today to see what we could come up with.

The subtle aesthetic nuances that worked so well in 2012 Momentum Football last season are on beautiful display in Panini America’s 2012-13 Momentum Basketball, the hardcourt debut of a brand with collectible roots planted deep in 1990s football. Clearly, though, the Momentum brand crosses over brilliantly to the NBA.

But while the raised-UV design element that brings every base card to life in 2012-13 Momentum Basketball owes its presence to similar stylings in last fall’s football release, there are an abundance of new twists to 2012-13 Momentum Basketball — such as deft die-cuts, a wealth of on-card autographs and the mesmerizing Drive parallels — sure to influence every new Momentum release in the future.
