Subset or PC Collection?? - Sports Card Forum

If you had to choose which collection to keep,
would you sell a subset you've been working on (2007 Leaf Limited Material Monikers #ed to Jersey and I have 38 out of 49, including Favre, Marino, Steve Young, Jim Brown, Namath, Montana) or sell the equal value $ in PC (Dan Marino)?

I'm torn on what to do... I have so many Marino cards, and thats my favorite player, yet the subset has a great balance of Popular players and its fun to work on.

I was faced with this predicament a few years ago... I was collecting GU sets... I had 2 sets with current/legendary players of the 80s and 90s... and was putting together one GU Jersey RC set every year... it was fun... but late 04, I decided to up my Marino collection, which led me to trying to get every card that was a part of the regular base set, which included SPs/Factory Set Versions/ Retail Versions/The LCM Immortals GU/ and the 05 Pristine Rare GU Auto /25.... I did not spend much money in 04 on my RC set that year and the same in 05... I found that I would rather buy Marino stuff than spend $50 on a Big Ben GU that I really didnt care for, I was just collecting for my collections sake... and at $200-300 per GU Rc set, I could buy a couple REALLY nice Marino's... Eventually I gave up the Rookie GU Sets... sold them off and kept the 2 GU Sets of the players I grew up watching... I never look at those GU sets, but I admire my Marino's all the time. The thing about collecting sets is, eventually, the set is finished and then you are left to hunt for something new. Unfortunately the card companies can't give a Marino collector a break and keep adding every year, along with older, rarer inserts and GUs I am still hunting, along with finding uncatalogued cards from 1985, its a looooong journey. I think its a great set, very impressive... hard to say which way to go on that one... The real test would be, if you saw a Marino you really wanted, or one of the low numbered cards from that set.... and you only had money for one of them, which one would you take?

Yeah Keep the Dan's!

Sets are kinda blah and will retain less value..

it was you----- did you see my thread about the randell cunninghamm #ed 12 ????? I wasn`t sure if you needed it or not but there was one on the bay last week and i made a thread about it for you hope ya saw it or got

Since you asked that question at the end of your reply Marinocollector, I guess right now I would go for the subset card, only because I can see an end in sight. With Marino I'm never going to get all his cards or even come close in any way. There really isn't even a way to seperate them (base, game used, auto, ect...) if I could just start from here on, I would not do anymore sub sets and stick with Marino, but I have to choose one or the other (at least be equal), hopefully I can make the right choice.

Well then, you have your answer. Finish that puppy! Take your time though... The less competition I have the more money it saves me!

Also, the big thing that has helped me with my Marino collection is I do not collect parallels or high end Auto's with similar photo's as base cards. It allows me to focus my money on Auto cards that can only be found Auto'd... and the similar picture thing just annoys me. I hated that my regular freebee Topps Throwback card had the same photo as my Topps Triple Threads /9 triple GU Auto, so I got rid of the Auto and bought something unique.... but I am weird like that.

I'd keep the PC and sell the subset, however I'm not much of a set guy, so take that with a grain of salt!
