I think I already conceded that the word persecuted isn't the best word.

Hated and distrusted are viable though.

Distrusted? Some study says so. Hated? Very, very doubtful.

The point is the amount of discrimination you face as an atheist is nothing compared to racial minorities and women. And just because you went back on it doesn't mean you didn't say it. If you want to see persecution, go to ones of the many countries that actually persecutes atheists.
Going back on your statement doesn't change the fact that you have an overinflated sense of persecution (in this context, that is correct, even if you never used the word for to begin with). You think your problems are as bad as gays? Last I checked you have the same marriage rights they're still fighting for.
Atheist are, by far, the most vocal for the least amount of problems. Get over it. Stop treating everyone like they should think the same as you. You're that group from high school that would complain about the cool kids not letting you in while being just as selective a group as they are. You criticize them for doing exactly what you do. You accuse them of living on a self imagined high ground without realizing you're right next door. It's childish whining and I'm so freaking sick of it. If ever there was a group practicing self-imposed persecution, it's atheists.

    Seriously, grow up.

When confronted in both the Hindu enclave of India, and the Muslim enclaves of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Malaysia, as to what my religion was......

My answer was that I was a Non-Religious Good Person. That believe it or not granted me more respect than what would have been given had I said that I was a christian.

Karma is not exclusive to India, it is quite noticeable however in poor countries

Right, is that why Atheists were named the least distrusted minority in the U.S?

Atheists are hated and persecuted in America a lot more than Christians, and to deny that is akin to believing that gays are no more persecuted than straights.

To claim that atheist are the most persecuted group in America is as baseless and factless as it gets. Atheist are not systematically murdered, beaten, tortured, raped or imprisioned for their lack of religion. It is quite common to hear of gays or blacks being killed for being gay or black. It is extremely rare that someone is killed for being atheist and even then it is typical that the killer was mentally unstable or there were other circumstances that played a role in it.

EDIT: Although now that I read further I see the issue has been addressed.

Beat me to it. As soon as I read that my first thought was that it was some law from the 1700's and I highly doubt that anyone in Arkansas even knows it exists or would try to enforce it.

I wonder if someone in Arkansas who was ordered to testify in court could refuse on the grounds that he is an atheist and it would violate state law?

And sorry Alex I have to disagree with you on this part. Yes if you come out and tell people you are an atheist some idiotic and close minded conservative people may make fun of you but it is no where as bad if you are a minority, gay or muslim.

Is that really necessary? It couldn't possibly be others?

I'm gonna have to agree with the others. I've seen people be treated wrongly for many reasons, being Atheist isn't one of those reasons, though.

Please show me examples of liberal people discriminating on the basis of race/religion/sexual preference.

Too busy to go searching, but you can't really think liberal's don't discriminate.

However, was it really necessary to use the wording you did? I know you didn't say 'all', but the 'idiotic and close minded' conservatives comment is a small minority of the group, just like the bad part of the liberal group.

They may be a small minority but they often have the loudest voice within the conservative camp.

It is extremely niave to think that liberals are these open-minded people who never treat others unfairly or have biased opinions of conservatives or conservative values.

How about the need to remove the word God from songs and images from courthouses? how about changing Christmas and Easter to some other name?
