I know what you mean I always am about to click threads like "Looking for lebron..." and then I see "GU's and autos". I see people that say they collect certain players, and don't even have 10% of all there cards, but all they want is GU's, wouldn't it make more sense to get cheap cards first and build off that.
I recently went threw all my cards, and threw out commons of no name players. I have like 5 GU's, and no autoraphs except ones i got signed by players themselves. I have hundreds of base cards of top players that are so hard to unload for players i am starting to collect. I come to realize that all the base cards I have of great players might be a waste also if nobody takes them. All GU's are expensive so do people with like 50 GU's call that a collection?
Ebay completly sucks for low valued cards, as people charge $2 to ship a card that should cost 37 cents to ship.

The commons are good for building sets or for kids that want cards that are affordable as they can be had for cheap in the base sets.

While I usually see guys just looking for higher end cards at shows, I also see lots of people sorting through dime boxes and such. However, there aren't a whole lot of dealers that bring them around. I also see a lot of player lots selling on ebay. It does take some work to build them. I think overall most collectors or dealers looking to turn cards are lazy or don't have the tome it takes to sort boxes of cards to get regular issues cards ready for resale. That's just fine by me though.

When I was younger, My brother and I waited after an Islander game for the players to come out to get an autograph. We waited for an hour after the game and all of a sudden Ziggy Palffy came out and started signing. Long story short, i never got the auto of ziggy but did get to pat his back.
To actually get a Auto or game used card is a real treat now that there more common. The sad part is GU's cards are dwarfing the value of rare inserts and even RC's ( Because now there are RC gu.) My early 1998 cards that were very rare to get are not tradable because the most the current collectors only want GU. What will be the next big thing on cards????

maybe next big thing is a redemption for a player to spend the day with you

I remember when Upper Deck (collector's choice set) about 11 years back had a redemption to have your picture on a card with Ken Griffey Jr. and a woman won that prize. That would be GREAT along with a 1/1 card signed by him. Now that would be unique. The next stages of cards would probably be technology driven to get the collector wanting it or something we havent thought of yet. They are making too many rare cards which is making the rare cards not rare in itself. Its kind of like cheating in a sense. Since there are more of them now and if they continue to make even more and more of these it may make them less sought out dropping demand.

I'm with you Ron. I try to collect every type of card out there. Base, inserts, gu, etc. The problem I have is when I ask for base or rookie cards and in response the trader wants a game used or auto. It seems like everyone just wants to trade for game used or autos. Luckily I have been able to find some great traders out there who have base and inserts to trade.

This argument epitimized how I feel about some collectors. I collect because I want to pass my collection down to my kids (when I have them, I'm only 16 :P). Me, I have about 700 Frank Thomas cards, and while I have a lot of GU (2 autos), it has become increasingly hard for me to get more, as my tradelist has become very thin with GU/Autos. To get a Thomas card, I could care less if I am trading a $10 card GU card for a $10 Thomas insert. And sometimes, I have a card that of a player that I know somebody collects, but they don't want it because it's not autographed, or it's not their draft pick card. This kind of collecting is not the kind of collecting this hobby needs, it alienates some people from the hobby.
Just my $0.02.

Come to think of it, you see NO ONE on this forum, or probably any other card collecting forum for that matter, have any truly good LeBrons up for trade. Maybe the cheapest RCs but nothing more. Sad that his prices have already taken into account his "projected" greatness. That means his prices have already been realized and there is no room for his cards' prices to move upwards. He is a very good player, but he still has yet to win a championship.
What Iverson cards are you looking for? Give me a PM. I really don't have anything past 1999.
