FL elementary school principal says First Amendment only for Christians

    http://jacksonville.com/community/cl...nly-christians

He was actually quoting some pastor, though he did put the quote in a memo and spread it around to his staff.

"Pastor Steven Andrew states: 'Our children need God back in schools,’ and he is calling Christians nationwide to bring back the Holy Bible and Christian prayer to schools," the memo said. "The First Amendment was for Christianity, not other religions."

Gee, and wasn't some guy just arguing that the public schools are not infested with right-wing religious agendas?

The idea of the first amendment being for christians is absurd. Why would anyone ever feel that way?

believe or not, no there isn't. i will not sit by while you claim to know what christians really want and believe. I probably have the most exposure to current christianity of anyone on here. The idea that the first amendment was for christianity only is ridiculous and the one who said it is as well.

I actually agree when you said the 1st amendment is for everyone not just christians. I'm going to show you some love for that. Church!! However there is a fringe element of conservative people (yourself not included) who do feel that the 1st amendment only applies to them even though it is not written anywhere in the constitution. People can interpert scripture to suit their own needs and they can do the constitution the same way.

You're absolutely right. I'm surprised you would say this.

from what I've heard some people say he's not the only person that believes this. Maybe they don't say it exactly but in their practices they tend to exclude non christians. I'm not sure what he means by a lot. I won't say it's a majority nor does it define the christian faith as a whole, but I'm sure there are a decent amount of people that act as if it's only for christians.

    I agree. it's absurd.

i agree for the most part. i guess i took issue with your use of the phrase "a lot" which was dumb on my part because it is such a subjective word. I agree that there is a group of people who act like this. I would also say that just because people act like it, doesn't mean they actually think the first amendment was written for them, just that they wish is was. semantics I know!
