Jonathon Gatehouse is the author of “The Instigator: How Gary Bettman Remade the League and Changed the Game Forever,” published last week in Canada by Viking and in the United States by Triumph Books. [Excerpt here.] The critically praised biography is the first of Bettman, who is perhaps the most important figure in hockey of the last 20 years, and it illustrates how and why he came to be the unchallenged leader of the N.H.L.’s club owners.

Gatehouse, a business writer for the Canadian newsmagazine Maclean’s, had access to Bettman and to those around him, giving him a unique vantage point as Bettman prepared for the third lockout of his tenure at the head of the N.H.L.
