Today in Nascar History November 11th:

Winners on this date: Tim Flock, Bill Norton, Speedy Thompson, Marvin Panch, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Bill Elliott, Jimmie Johnson, and Kevin Harvick.

November 11th, 1951: Tim Flock wins the 100 miler at the dangerous Lakewood Speedway in Atlanta. It is the first Nascar race held at the fast track with the Lake in the middle. Young driver Jesse James Taylor is critically injured in an early accident during the event.

November 11th, 1956: In perhaps the oddest double header day in Nascar history, Speedy Thompson wins at Hickory while Marvin Panch wins an event in Lancaster, PA on the same day. The race at Hickory counts on the 1956 calendar year for Nascar while the race at Lancaster is considered the opener of the 1957 season.

November 11th, 1984: Dale Earnhardt beats Bill Elliott to the flag to win the Atlanta Journal 500. Rookie driver Terry Schoonover dies in a crash on the 129th lap :(.

November 11th, 2001: Bill Elliott passes teammate Casey Atwood with 5 laps remaining and wins at Homestead. It is Ray Evernham's first career win as a car owner and Elliott ends a personal 7 year winless streak with the win.

November 11th, 2007: Jimmie Johnson dominates at Phoenix, cruising to an easy victory. Johnson further increases his points lead over teammate Jeff Gordon with just one race remaining in the season.

November 11th, 2012: On a day when championship contender Jimmie Johnson crashes and gives Brad Keselowski a substantial points lead heading to Homestead and Kevin Harvick snaps a year long winless streak, chaos and controversy are the main stories coming out of Phoenix. Jeff Gordon retaliates against Clint Bowyer with just two laps to go resulting in a fight in the garage and complete chaos. On the following Green-White-Checkered restart Harvick holds off Kyle Busch on an oil slicked track as countless others crash coming to the finish line to score the win in a wild and memorable event.

November 12th, 1995: Dale Earnhardt dominates and wins the season ending race at Atlanta, but it is not enough to derail Jeff Gordon of his first career Cup Championship. Gordon beats Earnhardt by a margin of 34 points, denying the Intimidator’s chance at a record 8th championship.

November 12th, 2006: Kevin Harvick dominates at Phoenix and wins relatively easily. Points leader Jimmie Johnson finishes a solid 2nd, putting him in good position entering the season's final event.

November 13th, 1949: After the success of the Strictly Stock race run at Lakewood Speedway, the promoter schedules a 2nd event to be run on November 13th. The race is rained out and completed the following week, with June Cleveland winning the event.

Today in Nascar History November 14th:

Winners on this date: Red Byron, Richard Petty (2 times), Rusty Wallace, Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, and Carl Edwards.

November 14th, 1948: Red Byron wins the final race of the season in Jacksonville, FL and beats Fonty Flock by 32.75 points to capture the inaugural Nascar championship. Flock wins 15 races during the year but loses due to Byron's 11 wins and more consistent finishes. Byron earns 1250 dollars for the championship.

November 14th, 1993: Rusty Wallace wins his 10th race of the year by winning the season finale at Atlanta. However, Wallace falls shy of rival Dale Earnhardt by 80 points in the championship, Earnhardt's 6th career title. After the race Wallace and Earnhardt do a side by side polish victory lap carrying a Davey Allison and Alan Kulwicki flag respectively to pay tribute to the 2 great drivers who lost their lives in 1993.

November 14th, 1999: Rookie Tony Stewart beats teammate Bobby Labonte by over 5 seconds to win the inaugural race at the new Homestead Miami Speedway. It is the rookie standout's 3rd win of the season, the most since rookie Dick Hutcherson won 5 times in 1965.

November 14th, 2004: In the first Southern 500 not held on Labor Day weekend, Jimmie Johnson wins at Darlington on a chilly November night.

November 14th, 2010: Carl Edwards uses a fast car and fuel mileage to win at Phoenix, ending a 70-race winless streak and becomes only the 2nd driver to complete the ‘perfect weekend’ sweep of being fastest in every Cup practice, qualifying on pole, and winning the race in the same weekend (Jimmie Johnson is the other). Points leader Denny Hamlin outruns Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick all day but loses out on fuel strategy, which tightens up the Chase with 1 race to go, leaving Hamlin only 15 points ahead of the 4 time champion.

Today in Nascar History November 15th:

Winners on this date: Cale Yarborough, Benny Parsons, Bill Elliott, and Jimmie Johnson.

November 15th, 1970: Cale Yarborough wins the American 500 at Rockingham and announces in victory lane that he will move to the Indy Car circuit in 1971.

November 15th, 1980: Benny Parsons wins the final race of the year at Ontario while Dale Earnhardt wins his first career Cup Series Championship. Earnhardt wins it by only 19 points over runner-up Cale Yarborough.

November 15th, 1992: In what many consider the best race in Nascar History, Bill Elliott, Alan Kulwicki, and Davey Allison all battle for the championship in the final race at Atlanta. Davey Allison, the points leader going into the race, is taken out in an accident leaving underdog Kulwicki and powerhouse Elliott to battle it out. Elliott dominates and wins the race, but Kulwicki leads enough laps and finishes close enough to Elliott to win the championship by a scant 10 points, the closest title race in Nascar History to that point. The race is also very significant in that it is 7 time champion Richard Petty's final career start and future 4 time champion and star of the sport Jeff Gordon's very first Cup Series race.

(note-every aspect of this race including the whole race itself, every crash, interview, tribute, etc is on Youtube-I’m not going to post them all).

November 15th, 2009: A week after losing over half of his points lead in an early wreck at Texas, Jimmie Johnson reassumes his dominant perch over the rest of the field by obliterating the competition at Phoenix, his 3rd consecutive win in the Fall event at the track.

Winners on this date: Donald Thomas, Tim Richmond, Bobby Labonte (2 times), and Carl Edwards.

November 16th, 1952: Donald Thomas with relief driving help from brother Herb Thomas, wins at Lakewood Speedway. At age 20, he becomes Nascar's youngest ever winner at that point (Joey Logano now holds that honor).

November 16th, 1986: Tim Richmond wins his 7th race of the year while Dale Earnhardt wins his 2nd career Cup Series title, beating runner up Darrell Waltrip by 288 points.

November 16th, 1997: Bobby Labonte wins the season finale at Atlanta. Dale Jarrett finishes 2nd, but Jeff Gordon finishes 17th-good enough to win the series championship by 14 points over Jarrett. Gordon is the youngest driver in series history to have won 2 championships.

November 16th, 2008: Carl Edwards dominates and wins his 3rd Cup race in 4 weeks and completes the weekend sweep at Homestead, but it is not enough to derail Jimmie Johnson who clinches his 3rd consecutive title, tying Cale Yarborough's mark.

During the event, Mike Ritch, a crewman for Bill Elliott, is fatally injured when he is hit on pit road by another car :( (this is why we have pit road speed today).

November 18th, 2007: Matt Kenseth wins the season finale at Homestead as Jimmie Johnson coasts to a solid finish and wraps up his 2nd consecutive Cup Series Championship.

November 18th, 2012: Jeff Gordon uses fuel strategy to take his first career win at Homestead (and first for HMS) for his 87th career victory. Young hotshoe Brad Keselowski becomes the Nascar Sprint Cup Champion for the first time as he beats a faltering Jimmie Johnson to claim the first Cup Championship for team owner Roger Penske.

The two stars tie in the points standings making it the closest ever finish and the first ever tie in Nascar history-Stewart wins the tiebreaker based on his 5 wins to Edwards' 1.
