View my store BetaSome of his rare issues go for more then book value. There still is a certain following that pay crazy amounts for his cards... You are correct some what that his cards dont sell for what they use to. After waiting and getting out bid on so many certain issues year after year i finally started to win some. Obviously after all those who were interested in a certain issue got theres and maybe owning a second one the price didnt go as high with less people interested. Another contributing factor is that not many are interested in base and inserts anymore shifting to more profitable collecting aspects like vintage and autographs. A card is only worth what some one is willing to pay for it. Why tear them up in disgust when sooner or later someone will be interested in them?

I havent ever really used this site extensively, and am just getting back into actively trying to establish any trading relationships and such here, as well as at B*&^*tt.com....Anyway, as my name suggests, YES, I have been collecting Roger Clemens (mentioned in a gluttonly of mid grade stars in the OP). I think this group of players etc is more what I am interested in the hobby for, as a FAN, not somebody hoping that I can pull a "Purple Polka dotted reverse negative platinum equos x q refractor Possibly Pre Game Warmup looked at jersey card" of someone I dont care for to try and hustle.
I find that Clemens' cards still bring a decent % premium of "BV". (My opinion is that no card is worth more than 20% of a "BV", even an auto because they are so common now.) I say this because : As far as any actually semi almost "rare" cards like inserts and stuff, its a constant war up to 5, 7, even 15 dollars on ebay between myself and other last minute collector snipers to get ahold of them. (so much so, that I often cease bidding because its more than what I feel a cardboard picture is worth). I am up to over 1500 different cards at this point, so I consider myself a real "player collector". I also have a good friend who has been collecting Mattingly with me since we were 7 or 8 and has the same size collection. Mattingly stuff still brings really big $ as far as we are concerned. Oddly enough, I also used to collect WIll The Thrill, and may pick that up again, just because ..........anyway........my 2 cents......oh, also, my GF collects Maddux, and I agree that his stuff brings really big $ for non 80's 90s base as well.......

View my store BetaNo matter who the player is 99% of the time a player will go down once he retires and is out of the spotlight. It makes sense since people will collect new players on their team versus a guy who is retired and somebody who is new to collecting and is 18 years old wouldn't have seen enough (or any) of Ken Griffey Jr play so him not choosing Griffey to collect wouldn't be that big of a shock.

A handful of stuff I was watching that was too over priced for the type and generation of cards that DID sell on the bay in the last few months.... you have to consider shipping as part of the cost (I know I do when bidding). In my opinion bring 5 dollars total and up on these modern era cards that are "rare" in the thousands is pretty decent. You cant reasonably expect to be getting half or full book on this era stuff, its only mass produced cardboard.

View my store BetaHmmm, well, dunno what to say really. Those early id 90s cards are tough I guess, but maybe its just that there were soooooooo many inserts and cards then, that people like me tend to look for "deals" and can't be aware/looking for every possible card and we miss some here and there. Also, I've noticed (I think) that people dont like to bid on cards at opening set proce bids, they like bidding from .01 or .99 sometimes.....but 2.55 seems fair for that, its probably near my cap for what I deem reasonable for that type of card for a player collection.
