View my store BetaIn Alabama, the state teachers union runs the dem party. It is the most powerful body in the state. I believe it is like that in most states.

So what do you want for the teachers? Not to have any representation or anyone fighting for their best intrests? Without teachers there would be no doctors, clergymen, engineers, politicians, cops or gasp lawyers. Leave the teachers union alone. It is better for all of us.

View my store BetaHere in BC we have a teacher's strike every few years. The union always claims there aren't enough teachers, but in negotiations, they don't ask for more teachers. They ask for higher pay. Then they strike for two weeks. Now, I understand the need for unions, but the unions aren't doing their job anymore. They used to fight for workers' rights, decent working conditions and fair pay. Now they fight for more pay (not fair) and nothing else. They haven't outgrown their usefulness, but as they work right now, they're detrimental. Teacher unions end up holding children hostage, denying them education for the purpose of a few dollars more (ultimately to the union). I went through 3 teacher strikes from K-12. I hate the idea of a child's education suffering over money and politics. While you're correct they need someone fighting for them, they need someone with integrity. Someone who realizes what the actual effects of their actions are.

View my store BetaIs that what I said mrv? The teachers union in Alabama (the AEA), like almost all unions, is more concerned with the union as a political entity than the actual people it is supposed to represent.
Also, when public sector employees collectively bargain with politicians, you NEVER get an arm's length deal, because the union is "negotiating" with the politicians it elected, and if the politicians don't play ball, the union will elect ones that will.
