Two California men and one teenage boy are under arrest as police allege they were behind a series of race-based attacks attempting to drive an African-American family out of their homes in Compton.

Sheriff's officials said a group of Latino males who claimed to be part of a street gang intimidated the family using metal pipes and shouting racial epithets.

Suspect Efren Marquez, 21, allegedly aimed a gun at a victim and threatened to shoot him as a second suspect, Jeffrey Aguilar, 19, beat him with the pipe.

They returned after 30 minutes with a large group, up to 20 gang members, who then surrounded the victim's homes and again shouted racial epithets.

They allegedly told them that 'n-words' were not allowed in the neighborhood.

One threw a beer bottle though a window into a living room.

The victims claim the gang members drove by the house several times per day.

Both Aguilar and Marquez were arrested Thursday along with one unidentified juvenile.

They are charged with hate crimes.

The attacks are the latest in what authorities say is a wave of intimidation by the Mexican Mafia seeking to force African Americans from their territory.

Earlier this month, leaders of the Azusa 13 gang were sentenced to lengthy prison terms for attacking African American residents and forcing them out of town.

'This gang has always made it clear they have a racial hatred for black people,' said Sheriff's Lt. Richard Westin, who noted the victimized family had no gang ties. 'They justify in their own sick minds because of their rivalry with the Compton black gangs. They repeatedly used racial epithets, they use racial hatred graffiti and they tag up the black church a lot.'
