A seven-year-old boy from Colorado has been suspended from school after he lobbed an imaginary grenade on the playground while pretending to be a hero soldier.

Alex Evans, of Loveland, said he was playing a make-believe game called 'rescue the world' during recess at Mary Blair Elementary School, which resulted in his removal from class after officials said he broke a key rule.

The second-grader explained that he tossed an imaginary grenade into a box containing made-up forces of evil, and made the sound 'pshhh' to indicate that the explosive had detonated.

The seven-year-old, dressed in a camouflage shirt, told the station KDVR that he did not throw anything real or make threats against anyone, but rather he pretended to be a hero acting bravely 'so nothing can get out and destroy the world.'

As it turns out, however, Alex's make-believe was in violation of one of the school's 'absolute' rules which bans students from using weapons, real or imaginary.

This is not the first time that imaginary or toy weapons have landed schoolchildren in trouble. As recently as last week, a five-year-old boy from Massachusetts was threatened with suspension for building a gun out of Legos.

Ha we used to carry sticks around and play army when I was in elementary! And when we threw grenades we pulled the pins out with our teeth! lol good memories..

I saw this and it's complete lunacy. How do they expect to keep boys from using imaginary weapons. That was about 60% of my day back when I was in elementary school. Sadly, these days, it's down to about 12%. :(

Wow even though these kids nowadays have every electronic gadget known to man I feel sorry for them that they are no longer allowed to use their imiganation. I'm sure glad that I grew up in the 1980s and not now.

When I was a kid, my parents weren't going to let me play with toy weapons, that all ended when I started using carrot sticks as guns.

Back in my day we had the nerve to play "cowboys and indians". What is this world coming to when kids can't have innocent fun? Might as well cancel recess altogether. They can't touch, can't imagine; what's next, no movement allowed!

cowboys and indians, cops and robbers, and war, I had more toy guns than i knew what to do with!

My parents wouldn't buy me toy guns, but never stopped me from pretending other things were guns and, if someone else bought me a squirt gun or dart gun, it didn't get taken away. They just refused to buy them for me.
As for pretend grenades, pinecones work great AND they hurt.
