Deaf Community Offended By Today Show Joke

So it seems that some in the deaf community are offended that a Today Show producer joked about a fake sign language interpreter at the Mandela Memorial. Just makes me wonder why they were not offended that the folks at the Mandela Memorial thought to little of the deaf community that they used a fake interpreter.

I still can't figure out why they did use a fake one. I am sure they could have found one and who thought to use a fake one?

I saw the today show first report this and the anchors thought that the fake sign language interpreter was distasteful. As for the joke. I didn't see it but sounds like it was poking fun at the stupidity of having a fake interpreter at an event such as this, not at deaf people. Even still, the Today show knows they can't do that joke.

That is the way I see it too. It seems to me that the deaf community is misguided in their anger.

Everybody is too serious nowadays, I don't think it was a poke at deaf people in any way. I often wondered to myself how many of those interpreters for the deaf were just going through the motions and not actually repeating what the person was saying.

The thing is there are a lot of words in the English language that no sign language exist for. So logically, a portion of what they do is either nonsensical to those who read sign language or just a blank spot where the speakers lips are moving but the translator does nothing. Regardless, the Today Show joke was not something for them to be upset about. If I were hearing impaired and going to get upset then I would be upset that the Mandela Memorial organizers cared so little about me that they would put a fake interpreter out there.

Was he fake or just really bad? He seemed to be able to sign stuff....just not anything that made sense with what was going on. Maybe he was the best that they could find?
