LAS VEGAS (AP) — A man who tried to make off with a suitcase full of costumes and props used by the all-male revue Thunder From Down Under fired a shot at the head of one cast member before being subdued and left with a black eye, police said Wednesday.
The thief pulled a .44-caliber Magnum handgun before another cast member jostled his hand, police said in an arrest report that provided a dramatic account of the behind-the-scenes fight Tuesday evening at the Excalibur Hotel and Casino.
The bullet struck a wall, the gun fell to the floor, and six well-muscled members of the Australia-based group held the man until security arrived, the report said.
The suspect, who appears to be in his 20s, identified himself, but police suspect he provided a fake name. He suffered unspecified injuries and was hospitalized before being booked as "John Doe" into the Clark County jail.
A jailhouse booking photo shows a black eye and facial bruises from the backstage scuffle.
"The suspect definitely got the worst of it," Las Vegas police Officer Laura Meltzer said.
The suspect was awaiting an initial court appearance on felony attempted murder, armed robbery and burglary with a weapon charges that could get him decades in state prison if he is convicted. It wasn't immediately clear if he had a lawyer.
One cast member was treated at the Excalibur for minor injuries.
The weapon was seized as evidence. Police said it wasn't registered.
Several people told investigators they noticed the man walking around the showroom before Tuesday's performance wearing a SWAT hat, fireman's shirt and police-style boots. They told investigators that no one approached him because they thought he was a new dancer.
When confronted, the man allegedly told the show director that he bought the items for his girlfriend.
Performers later realized the items he wore had been taken from their dressing areas, according to the police report.
Thunder From Down Under, an all-male group featuring chiseled shirtless men, has wowed millions of viewers, mostly women, since 1991.
A Thunder From Down Under executive didn't respond Wednesday to several messages from The Associated Press.
Hotel operations and the show schedule weren't affected, said Gordon Absher, a spokesman for hotel owner MGM Resorts International.

A Florida minister used a tree house at his home to sexually abuse a young girl, police said.
Deacon Thomas Warren Halsey, 65, was arrested for allegedly sexually battering a girl under the age of 10 on his Leesburg property, reports the Orlando Sentinel.
The deacon turned himself in to police on Friday. He is being held at Lake County jail on no bail and is charged with two counts of sexual battery on a child under the age of 12, according to the jail.
The victim told police the deacon told her to touch him inappropriately in the tree house and also in his bed. He also exposed himself to the girl in the tree house, the newspaper reports.

She told police the incident was "creepy" and declined to discuss it in more detail, the newspaper reported.
The suspect told police the girl touched him inappropriately and said she would run away if he did not take his clothes off. He claimed to inform the girl's mother what happened, but she denied that he did.

A Mexican teen brutally stabbed her best friend to death for posting naked selfies of them together on Facebook, police said.
Erandy Elizabeth Gutierrez, 16, allegedly knifed Anel Baez, also 16, a horrifying 65 times in the vicious March 19 attack.
Cops believe she wanted revenge for the "humiliating" uploading of the revealing snaps.
Baez asked her former pal - who she had previously referred to as being her "sister" - over to her Guamúchil, Sinaloa state, home to try and patch things up, according to Mexican media reports.
When Gutierrez arrived she reportedly asked to use the bathroom - but then grabbed a knife from the kitchen and allegedly used it to repeatedly stab Baez. After fleeing the scene, Gutierrez was arrested when attending Baez's funeral several days later.
Gutierrez had threatened her former pal over Twitter in the weeks before the alleged murder.

"It may seem that I am very calm, but in my head I have killed you at least three times," the site reports she wrote on a now-deleted account.
Since the attack, the pair's high school has been hosting lectures aimed at preventing similar tragedies.

A Utah mother was facing multiple counts of murder Sunday after cops made the grisly discovery of seven dead babies in the garage of her former home — six stuffed in cardboard boxes.
Megan Huntsman, 39, is believed to be the mother of all the dead infants police suspect were killed between 1996 and 2006.
“My personal reaction? Just shocked. Couldn’t believe it. The other officers felt the same. They got more and more shocked each box they opened,” said Capt. Michael Roberts of the Pleasant Grove, Utah, Police Department.
Huntsman was charged with six counts of murder. It was unclear why she was not charged with the seventh murder.

Matthew de Grood is also the son of a 33-year veteran of the Calgary police force, Chief Rick Hanson said at a Tuesday afternoon press conference. No motive was offered about the brutal slayings at an all-day house party celebrating the end of the school year.
The slash-happy student left his job at a grocery store before he arrived at the party at 11 Butler Crescent N.W., a house just north of the campus where de Grood was an invited guest.
About 20 people were still at the gathering when the knife-wielding student arrived.
Cops were called to the gruesome scene about 1:20 a.m. Tuesday.
We have never seen five people killed by an individual at one scene, so the scene was horrific.
“The suspect arrived at the party, obtained a large knife and targeted the victims one by one, stabbing them several times,” Hanson said. “When our officers arrived, three young men were discovered deceased in the home.”
A woman found critically injured inside the home died of her wounds at the hospital, while a man found near death outside on a lawn later died as well, Hanson added.
A police K-9 tracked the suspect and bit de Grood during the arrest. The man was treated at a local hospital before being released to police custody, where he was later charged with five counts of murder.
Cops said the five dead are a 22-year-old Priddis, Alberta, man; a 23-year-old woman from Calgary; and two men, ages 23 and 27, from Calgary.

Their identities have yet to be released publicly, and police are still scratching their heads about what set off the madman.
It doesn’t appear de Grood was drunk or high on drugs, either, cops said.
“Nothing at all would indicate that there was an event that occurred earlier that precipitated what happened,” Hanson told reporters.
The man brought “an instrument,” described as a weapon, to the party, but used a knife he found inside of the house for his slash spree, Hanson said
None of the victims nor the suspect had ever before had contact with cops, Hanson said.
“These were all good kids. There’s no question about that,” the chief said of the victims. “They did nothing wrong, and nothing that they did contributed to what happened to them.”
An emotional Hanson said he had spoken to the purported perp's cop dad, who is “devastated” and “heartbroken” over what his son has allegedly done.
The students were celebrating “Bermuda Shorts Day,” named for the last day of classes, with a backyard barbecue.
“It was like a normal gathering; it wasn’t loud, it wasn’t unruly. Around dusk, they moved inside, and then we didn’t really hear anything,” Doug Jones told the TV station. “We woke up this morning to yellow tape in the back alley here. I was in shock when the reporters told us what happened.”
The investigation continues as cops continue to speak with witnesses, Hanson said.
“This is the worst mass murder in Calgary’s history,” he said. “We have never seen five people killed by an individual at one scene, so the scene was horrific.”

I love the sentiment, but your wording shows a sexist pig.
