    Winners on this date: Cale Yarborough, Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, and Tony Stewart.

    March 11th, 2001: Only 3 races after replacing the lat Dale Earnhardt, rookie Kevin Harvick beats Jeff Gordon to the line in a photo finish to score his first career win. It is an emotional victory for the fans and the sport.

    March 11th, 2007: Jimmie Johnson once again cruises in the desert and easily wins at Las Vegas.

    March 13th, 1983: Richard Petty holds off Bill Elliott to win the Carolina 500 at Rockingham. The win breaks a 43 race winless drought for Petty and it is the 196th win of his illustrious career.

    Today in Nascar History March 16th:

    Winners on this date: Marshall Teague, Lee Petty, David Pearson, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Morgan Shepherd, Ricky Craven, Jeff Burton, and Carl Edwards.

    March 16th, 1980: Dale Earnhardt holds off rookie Rusty Wallace to take the win in Atlanta. It is the first superspeedway victory for Earnhardt.





    March 16th, 1986: Morgan Shepherd holds off Dale Earnhardt and wins at Atlanta in an unsponsored car. It is Shepherd's 2nd career Cup victory.



    March 16th, 2003: In what many consider one of the greatest races in Nascar history, Ricky Craven beats Kurt Busch at Darlington in an amazing late race duel and to the line in a photo finish. The .002 margin of victory is tied for the closest in Nascar history to this day.







    March 16th, 2008: Jeff Burton takes advantage of Joe Gibbs racing's misfortunes to take the win at Bristol. Burton is 4th with a few laps to go but Kevin Harvick spins Tony Stewart, allowing Burton to take 2nd, and when Denny Hamlin has fuel pickup problems on the restart, Burton is there again to take advantage for the win.



    March 16th, 2014: After another day long battle with rain Bristol turns into a spring night race with competitors battling both the impending rain and the field. Carl Edwards is on his way to an easy win when a malfunctioning caution light brings out a yellow with two laps to go-as the field settles in for a GWC finish the skies open and a downpour occurs. Nascar calls to throw the checkers as Edwards earns his 3rd win at the Tennessee half-mile.

    March 17th, 1985: Bill Elliott beats Geoff Bodine to win at Atlanta despite racing with a broken leg suffered in a crash at Rockingham 2 weeks earlier.



    March 17th, 2002: Sterling Marlin wins a wild race at Darlington as many crashes mar the event. Steve Park crashes early in his 1st start back from severe injuries, and Tony Stewart takes a trip to the hospital after crashing while leading late in the race.

    March 18th, 1984: Benny Parsons wins at Atlanta by outrunning Dale Earnhardt and Cale Yarborough. It is BP's 21st career victory.



    March 18th, 2007: Jimmie Johnson out-duels the other home improvement car driven by Tony Stewart and wins the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta.



    March 18th, 2012: Brad Keselowski outruns Matt Kenseth and dominates the 2nd half of the event to take his 2nd straight victory at Bristol. Many of the top contenders are eliminated in an early 5 car pile-up.
