The Wild, Wild Western Conference
Four days left and there's not much at all set in the West...
The Pacific Division places are assured as all three teams can't move up or down from where they are now. Minnesota is also locked in to that top wild card seed. Standings as follows:
Anaheim
St. Louis
Colorado
Chicago
San Jose
Los Angeles
Minnesota
Dallas
------
Phoenix
San Jose vs. LA is a confirmed series now in a Pacific Division battle.
Remaining calendars:
Anaheim: LA, COL
St. Louis: MIN, DAL, DET
Colorado: VAN, SJ, ANA (all on the road)
Chicago: WSH, NAS (both on the road)
San Jose: COL, PHX
Los Angeles: EDM, ANA
Minnesota: STL, NAS
Dallas: STL, PHX
------
Phoenix: NSH, SJ, DAL
I can't even begin to predict how this all plays out. There's just so many internal games amongst this group to play here. The Blues can mess up teams in both conferences with their remaining games, and San Jose's games also have a big impact on those around them. We know this:
The fate of the Stars and Coyotes comes down to their final game of the season, where they square off against one another.

This new playoff format is exciting (and somewhat confusing!!)

The new alignment is idiotic and the playoff format and wild card idea does NOTHING.
There are 30 teams - look at a map, split them down the middle, 15 teams each. The biggest changes needed were Detroit and Winnipeg switching conferences. That's it. You could adjust the divisions to accurately reflect who plays in each division afterwards.
As for the playoff format: The top eight teams for each conference still get in, they just messed with the order of whom plays whom. No added excitement there, sorry.
You wanna add excitement and make the wild card idea worthwhile? Add two extra teams per conference. One extra series in the first round won't hurt and would bring in extra revenue for the four teams.
This isn't rocket science. But, true to form with the Gary Bettman-led NHL, they seek to confuse people to cover up the egregious errors they have made. One of the errors they made was awarding a point to each team if the score is tied.
If you win, you should get two points, and if you lose you should get nothing. I guarantee that teams would try harder to end the game without going to overtime or the shootout if the only points on the line are the two for the winner.

lol
Bring back ties and take out the Shoot Out. It was only brought in for the excitement as everyone likes shootouts or breakaways. If you tie after regulation and 5 minute overtime you should get a point. Forcing one team over the other for an extra point via a shootout is the element that should be taken away.Master List: Hidden Content

I'm curious how letting 20 out of 30 teams into the playoffs would be beneficial, let alone how playoff rounds would work.
That being said, fully in agreement about win = points, loss = nothing. It's silly to reward teams for losing. We might as well all just play soccer.

The one thing that I do like about the new divisional/wild card alignment is that you know you're going to get a good rivalry series in one of the first two rounds. And that's exactly what the NHL wanted with this new configuration. If the Leafs hadn't imploded entirely they very well could have faced Boston in round one and, provided the stars aligned, the Canadiens in round two. Who wouldn't want that? That's great for the fans, the League, and the TV ratings. There's key matches in every round that will fuel the rivalries, and that's what they wanted to get.
I still don't care for the 14/16 split of the teams. That was a silly move. Unless it was done strictly with an eye towards a 32-team NHL in the medium-long term.

Yeah, the 14/16 split stinks but the league will be up to 32 teams before too long.

Blues are playing like they want to be bounced in the first round. Hitchcock must be wanting to eat about 10,000 doughnuts right about now. Wild just schooled them a few minutes ago.

Bettman is trying to build Basketball Rivalries in Hockey. How can you not see this? He has implemented the Wild Card format so that MLB will look his way when choosing a new Commissioner.
What bothers me is that Bettman has only ever wanted the MLB job. He really cares about little else. He can go to hell.
