Today in Nascar History August 1st:

Winners on this date: Curtis Turner, Fonty Flock, Danny Petner, Ned Jarrett, Richard Petty (2 times), Darrell Waltrip, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and Greg Biffle.

August 1st, 1959: Ned Jarrett scores his 1st ever Grand National series win by taking the checkers in Myrtle Beach,SC. Jarrett had bought his winning car a few days earlier with a post-dated check that wouldn’t clear the bank until the Monday after the event.

August 1st, 2010: Greg Biffle dodges the rain and uses a two tire strategy late in the going and pulls away from Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards to win at Pocono-ending a long winless drought for Ford and for himself. Elliott Sadler survives a wicked crash on the backstretch during the event in which his whole engine flies out of the car.

Today in Nascar History August 2nd:

Winners on this date: Herb Thomas, Jack Smith, Ned Jarrett, Richard Petty (2 times), Ron Bouchard, and Ricky Rudd.

August 2nd, 1958: Jack Smith takes the win on the Bridgehampton Road Course on Long Island. It is Nascar's first ever race in the New York City area.

August 2nd, 1981: Unknown rookie driver Ron Bouchard passes Darrell Waltrip and Terry Labonte coming to the flag and beats them in a photo finish at Talladega to score his first and what was to be his only Cup Series victory.



August 2nd, 1997: Owner driver Ricky Rudd scores the biggest win of his long and storied career by winning the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis.

Today in Nascar History August 3rd:

Winners on this date: Jim Paschal, Joe Weatherly, David Pearson, Neil Bonnett, Dale Jarrett, Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

August 3rd, 1996: Dale Jarrett passes Ernie Irvan with 7 laps to go and goes on to win the Brickyard 400. After the race, Jarrett and crew start the tradition of kissing the Bricks.

August 3rd, 2003: Kevin Harvick scores one of the biggest wins of his career, taking the checkers in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis.

August 3rd, 2008: After an argument with his crew chief during a brief rain delay about their race strategy, driver Carl Edwards' premonition that the race will resume is correct and he cruises to his 4th win of the season in the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono.



August 3rd, 2009: Denny Hamlin uses a flurry of late race restarts and a dominate car to score his first win in 50 races and his 3rd career in 8 tries at Pocono.



August 3rd, 2014: Dale Earnhardt Jr. holds off Kevin Harvick at Pocono to complete the season sweep at the track and claim his 3rd victory of the season. Many contenders are taken out in a 13 car pile-up midway through the event which affects many drivers trying to get into the chase.

Today in Nascar History August 4th:

Winners on this date: Buck Baker, Parnelli Jones, Jim Paschal, LeeRoy Yarbrough, Richard Petty, and Bill Elliott.

August 4th, 1946: Ed Samples takes an easy victory in a stock car race in Greensboro, NC. Top challenger to Samples Roy Hall is apprehended in a gunfight at a nearby hotel by federal agents, who knew Hall would be there for the race.

August 4th, 1956: Lee Petty gets out of his car in anger on the 32nd lap, climbs the flagstand and grabs the red flag from the flagman, and waves the race at Tulsa, OK to a stop. The dusty conditions were terrible for the drivers and Petty had had enough. The race is never completed or rescheduled.



August 4th, 1957: Buck Baker dominates the 100 miler at the Watkins Glen Road Course, leading every lap.



August 4th, 1974: Nascar holds its first ever race at the Pocono International Raceway. Richard Petty takes the win in the event, which is shortened to 480 miles due to rain.



August 4th, 2002: Bill Elliott runs down and passes Rusty Wallace in the late going and goes on to win the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis. It is Elliott's 43rd career win.

Winners on this date: Jim Paschal (2 times), Ned Jarrett, Darrell Waltrip, Dale Earnhardt, Bobby Labonte, Jeff Gordon (2 times), and Kurt Busch.

August 5th, 1979: Darrell Waltrip beats David Pearson to the checkers by a good margin to win the Talladega 500. Kyle Petty makes his first ever career cup series start, and he finishes a respectable 9th.

August 5th, 1995: Dale Earnhardt holds off the competition to score the win in the 2nd annual Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.



August 5th, 2000: Bobby Labonte out-duels Rusty Wallace late in the going and goes on to win the Brickyard 400.



August 5th, 2001: Jeff Gordon holds on to win his 3rd career Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis.



August 5th, 2007: Kurt Busch absolutely dominates the field at Pocono, leading 167 of the 200 laps in route to an easy victory.



August 5th, 2012: With an impending rain storm looming, a late race restart causes chaos at the front of the field as the dominant car of the day in Jimmie Johnson slides up the track and crashes into Matt Kenseth allowing Jeff Gordon to sneak through on the inside to take the lead and the win at Pocono as rain pelts the track under the subsequent yellow and the race is called. It is Gordon's 7th career win at Pocono-the most all-time.

Today in Nascar History August 6th:

Winners on this date: Jim Paschal, Dick Hutcherson, Bobby Isaac, Bobby Allison, James Hylton, Lennie Pond, Jeff Gordon, and Jimmie Johnson.

August 6th, 1971: Bobby Allison drives a Ford Mustang to the win at Winston-Salem. It is the first race mixing Nascar’s Cup cars with the Pony cars of the Grand American Division.

August 6th, 1972: Independent driver James Hylton scores the only win of his career by beating Ramo Stott to the line in the Talladega 500. Tire problems within the race take all of the top contenders out of contention allowing the opportunity for Stott and Hylton.



August 6th, 1978: Lennie Pond wins the Talladega 500 in a big upset for his first and only Cup Series victory. Pond’s average speed for the event is a tad over 174 miles per hour, a then record for the event.



August 6th, 1994: Young Jeff Gordon holds off Brett Bodine to win the inaugural Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis. More than 340,000 people attend the event and watch Gordon take his 2nd career win.



August 6th, 2006: Jimmie Johnson wins his first Brickyard 400.

Winners on this date: Bob Flock, Lee Petty, Speedy Thompson, Johnny Beauchamp, David Pearson, Richard Petty, Donnie Allison, Dale Jarrett, Tony Stewart, and Brad Keselowski.

August 7th, 1949: Bob Flock takes the victory at Occoneechee Speedway in North Carolina. Flock takes advantage of a late race 6 car incident triggered by leaders Red Byron and Sara Christian. Over 17000 people show up to watch the race.

August 7th, 1999: Dale Jarrett cruises to a dominating win in the Brickyard 400.



August 7th, 2005: Native Hoosier Tony Stewart finally reaches his ultimate goal, to win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, by taking the win in the Brickyard 400.



August 7th, 2011: A battered and bruised Brad Keselowski toughs it out at Pocono and holds off Kyle Busch to take his 3rd career victory and his first at the tricky triangle. His performance was all the more amazing considering he was battling a broken foot and many bruises sustained in a wicked testing accident at Road Atlanta only a few days prior to the event.

Winners on this date: Fonty Flock, Richard Petty (4 times), David Pearson, Dave Marcis, Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon, and Juan Pablo Montoya.

August 8th, 1961: Curtis Turner states that most of the drivers have joined the Teamsters Union (a driver’s union created by Turner). Nascar president Bill France states that no union member can compete in a Nascar race and that he will use a gun to enforce it!

August 8th, 1976: Dave Marcis takes his first career superspeedway win by winning the Talladega 500.



August 8th, 2004: Jeff Gordon wins the Brickyard 400, becoming the first 4 time winner of the event.



August 8th, 2010: Juan Pablo Montoya and Marcos Ambrose engage in a terrific duel throughout the road course event at Watkins Glen with Montoya emerging victorious to claim his 2nd career Cup win and his 1st in 113 races.

August 9th, 2014: In a sad turn of events for the racing community, Nascar star and champion Tony Stewart hits 20 year old driver Kevin Ward Jr. with his Sprint Car under yellow in a sprint car race in northern New York, fatally injuring the young man. Stewart withdraws from the next day's Nascar event.

Today in Nascar History August 10th:

Winnerson this date: Marvin Panch, Joe Weatherly, David Pearson, LeeRoy Yarbrough, Tim Richmond, Rusty Wallace, Jeff Gordon, Robby Gordon, Kyle Busch, Tony Stewart, and AJ Allmendinger.

August 10th, 1947: Bob Flock wins a 200 mile race at Langhorne Speedway in Pennsylvania. 45 cars start the event on the one mile complete circle.

August 10th, 1986: The Nascar Cup Series returns to Watkins Glen for the first time since 1965. Tim Richmond takes the victory, beating Darrell Waltrip to the line.

August 10th, 2003: Robby Gordon, driving the 31 car for RCR, completes the season sweep of the road courses by winning at Watkins Glen.



August 10th, 2008: Kyle Busch dominates much of the race at Watkins Glen and cruises to the victory, his 8th of the season.

August 10th, 2009: Tony Stewart holds off Marcos Ambrose and Carl Edwards to claim his 5th career win at the Watkins Glen Road Course. Jeff Gordon, Sam Hornish, and Jeff Burton all walk away relatively unscathed after a huge crash in turn 9 midway through the event.

August 10th, 2014: AJ Allmendinger and Marcos Ambrose engage in an awesome fender-banging late race duel for the win at Watkins Glen with Allmendinger coming out on top to claim his first career Cup Series victory. The underdog win puts the small JTG Daughtery team in the chase. The race also sees a massive accident involving Ryan Newman and Michael McDowell midway through the event which leads to one of the races two red flag periods.
