If you call being respectful in all circumstances "changing the rules"; I don't know what to tell you. If Jane Smith, marries Mr. Doe. I would call her Mrs. Doe. If she then divorces and reverts back to Smith, I will call her that. If she then marries Mr. Greenberg, I will call her Mrs. Greenberg when warranted. At no time will I think I am being asked to "change" my behaviour to accommodate her.

You are right, you don't understand people.
People are not all created as simply as you would like to think. People are not only born with male and female anatomy, they are also born with male and female gender orientation and different sexual orientations.
Life is complex. Those that choose to think otherwise are lazy, ignorant or both.

I am in agreement with habs except for this
they are also born with different sexual orientations.
I do not think this is something that is innate, but I could be wrong.

So people are either gay or straight from birth? Hmmmm...you might want to call Anne Heche and let her know what her sexual orientation is since she can't seem to figure it out on her own.
I think it is funny. You don't like someone putting homosexuality in a box by saying it is a choice, yet you put it in a box by saying it is not. Clearly there are instances that support both positions.

Where did I say that? Please don't put words in my mouth. Did you ever consider that there are more than 2 sexual orientations?

Why haven't they thought up a neutral word to refer to people when you are unsure of what to call them. Funny ya'll are having this discussion I was job hunting a while back and got a call from a person who I wasn't sure if it was a gay male or a female with a terrible sounding voice. I called in and asked for the person by full name. The lady who answered said that he is not in the office right now. If they can come up with new words for everything else why not a new non offensive word for these types of situations?

You dodged the question as well. You ding Jay for his statement that it is a choice, yet you totally ignore that your position that it is not a choice is just as flawed. You are no more correct than he is. Some choose it, some feel that way their entire life.
And yes I know there are more than two sexual choices.
Those are titles, not gender definitions. Try to focus. Calling an obvious man a woman's name or vice versa because they want to be called that is absolutely nothing like calling someone by a different surname that was changed legally based on marital status.
