    December 12th, 1947: Red Byron wins the NCSCC finale at Jacksonville. 7-time winner on the season Fonty Flock is declared the champion of the series, beating runner-up Ed Samples by 235 points.



    December 12th, 1953: Nascar President Bill France reveals plans to build a 2.5 mile superspeedway in Daytona Beach, FL. France puts the estimated price at 1,674,000 and thinks it could open by 1955 (he’d be wrong on both accounts).



    December 12th, 1971: Richard Petty demolishes the competition in the final race of the year at Texas World Speedway to take his 21st win of a dominating season. Petty wins the championship by 364 points over James Hylton for his 3rd career title.

    December 14th, 1947: Bill France and 35 other gentlemen meet at the Streamline Motel in Daytona Beach to discuss the future for Stock Car Racing. A set of rules is established and Red Vogt coins the name for what will be the new stock car series-the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, or NASCAR. Fonty Flock, the winner of the 1947 NCSCC title, will be recognized as the 1947 Nascar champion in 1948 press releases.

    December 17th, 1969: Nascar signs a television contract with ABC, which will broadcast 9 Nascar races, including 5 live, in the 1970 season.

    December 17th, 2010: Nascar drivers hit the freshly paved high banks of Daytona International Speedway in a Goodyear tire test for Nascar. It is the first time racecars had been on the track since it was freshly repaved. The speedway had not been repaved since the late 1970’s.
