My entry this week is one of my favorite cards; a 1928 German Greiling Wintersport Series cigarette card of Joseph Sullivan.

Sullivan was the goaltender for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues who represented Team Canada (coached by Conn Smythe) at the 1928 Winter Olympics in which Canada won the Gold medal without allowing a goal against. After receiving a bye directly into the medal round and backstopped by Sullivan (2 games) and Stuffy Mueller (1 game), Canada outscored their opponents 38-0; beating Sweden (11-0), Great Britain (14-0) and Switzerland (13-0).

The back of the card roughly translated (thanks Google!) says "Canada's goalie needed at the Winter Olympic Games 1928 in St. Moritz not too much to get in activity, as his team was superior to the other teams."

Since 1975-76 the Senator Joseph A. Sullivan Trophy, named in his honour, has been presented annually to the outstanding hockey player in Canadian Interuniversity Sport.

I just received this one not too long ago by way of Sweden. One of only two international cards in my collection at this point. Personally, I like Kopitar's signature, but I believe his style from 05/06 is particularly nice.

    WANT: ROOKIE YEAR & JERSEY NUMBERED cards of Aho + Zetterberg + Kovalchuk + Datsyuk + Kopitar + Nash + Spezza + Zibanejad + F. Forsberg + Teravainen + Barkov + Huberdeau + Mantha + MORE
