Waltrip and Wallace’s crews get in a fight post-race and Waltrip says that he hopes Rusty “chokes on that 200,000”. This event altered the popularity of both drivers greatly-Waltrip positively for the rest of his career and Wallace negatively for a longtime.

Today in Nascar History May 24th:

Winners on this date: Herb Thomas, Bob Welborn, Rex White, Jim Paschal, Donnie Allison, Bobby Allison, Kyle Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, and Carl Edwards.

May 24th, 1964: Jim Paschal posts his first career win by winning the World 600 at Charlotte. The race is also tragic as Fireball Roberts crashes and bursts into flames on the 8th lap-he would succumb to his injuries from the crash on July 2nd :(

May 24th, 1970: Donnie Allison wins by over two laps to claim the World 600. ABC cameras join the race in progress just over halfway through.

May 24th, 1987: Kyle Petty, driving for the Wood Brothers, wins the World 600 and gives the Wood Brothers Team its 70th superspeedway victory overall. Petty is in position to win the race due to heavy attrition.

May 24th, 1992: Dale Earnhardt wins the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte by outrunning Ernie Irvan on the racetrack and by using some questionable tactics on pit lane. Earnhardt comes in trailing Irvan by 3 seconds on the last pit stop and their pit times are essentially the same, yet Earnhardt emerges from the pits 1.2 seconds ahead of Irvan. The competitors cry foul and protest that he was speeding on pit road-no penalty was enforced.

May 24th, 1998: Jeff Gordon passes Rusty Wallace late in the going to win the Coca Cola 600. The win catapults Gordon into the points lead.

May 24th, 2015: Carl Edwards uses a slick strategy and saves enough fuel late to ride home and take the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte. The win is Edwards' first for Joe Gibbs Racing since switching teams in the off season.

Today in Nascar History May 25th:

Winners on this date: Buck Baker, LeeRoy Yarbrough, Richard Petty, Benny Parsons, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, and David Reutimann.

All-Star Event Race Winners on this date: Darrell Waltrip.

May 25th, 1975: Richard Petty takes a popular win in the World 600 in Charlotte. Rookie Dale Earnhardt makes his first career Nascar Cup Series Start in a Dodge-he finishes 22nd.

May 25th, 1985: Darrell Waltrip dominates the inaugural Winston All Star event at Charlotte Motor Speedway in route to victory. As soon as Waltrip crosses the finish line the engine in his Junior Johnson owned ride detonates causing much debate and controversy as to if they meant to blow it up or not. (something illegal was in the engine?-highly likely)

May 25th, 2003: Jimmie Johnson is out front when rain halts the Coca Cola 600-giving Jimmie the victory.

May 25th, 2008: When leader Tony Stewart has a flat with 3 laps to go, Kasey Kahne takes advantage and goes on to win the Coca Cola 600.

May 25th, 2009: On a rainy Memorial Day in Charlotte, David Reutimann uses great strategy and a little bit of luck to score his first career victory. The Coca Cola 600 win is the first for MWR, the #00 in Cup competition, and for David himself. Also on this Memorial Day race, the cars are stopped in tribute at the 3 O'Clock hour to salute and pay respects-a great scene at the track.

Today in Nascar History May 29th:

Winners on this date: Bob Flock, Herb Thomas, Lee Petty (2 times), Junior Johnson, David Pearson, Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and Kevin Harvick.

May 29th, 2005: After Diamond Grinding the surface at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, the Coca Cola 600 turns into a wreckfest with countless accidents. The race still holds the record for cautions in a Cup Series race at 22. Jimmie Johnson battles Bobby Labonte in a photo finish to the line with Jimmie prevailing in the crazy event.

Note: The Whole entire race is available on Youtube for watching-it is in 19 different parts-if anyone wants to watch the race.

    The Finish-JJ vs. Bobby Labonte

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1Zv_yXWhOY

May 29th, 2011: In perhaps the wildest and most unpredictable day of auto racing events in history, Kevin Harvick nightcaps the day by winning in thrilling fashion in a fuel mileage derby in the Coca Cola 600. Dale Earnhardt Jr. appears headed for a victory to snap his long winless drought after a crazy late race restart but runs out of gas on the last corner, allowing Harvick to zoom by and score an unlikely 3rd win of the season. (It is also the longest race ever run as far as miles in Nascar history due to the Green White Checkered Finish). Earlier in the day the Monaco Grand Prix and Indianapolis 500 both had equally thrilling and odd finishes, so coincidental in fact that the car leading on the last lap and last corner of the Indy 500 (and who crashed off the last corner and lost) had the National Guard sponsorship on it, just like Earnhardt Jr's car-an odd and unique turn of events indeed.

Today in Nascar History May 30th: (VERY busy day in Nascar history)

Winners on this date: Marshall Teague (2 times), Paul Pappy, Bill Rexford, Herb Thomas (2 times), Fonty Flock, Buck Baker (3 times), John Soares, Lloyd Dane, Fireball Roberts, Parnelli Jones, LeeRoy Yarbrough, Ned Jarrett, Bobby Allison, David Pearson, Neil Bonnett, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Burton, and Jimmie Johnson.

May 30th, 1953: A 300 mile event is held on Memorial Day at the 1 mile Raleigh, NC Speedway. Fonty Flock comes from 43rd on the starting grid to win the race. Tim Flock is running in 2nd place late in the event but......he falls to third after being forced to pit because of....Jocko Flocko-his pet monkey co-pilot.

As told by Tim Flock: "In the 300-mile race at Raleigh, we had a little problem with Jocko. Late in the race, while I was running 2nd, he broke loose from his seat and jumped down on the floorboard. He yanked the cable and opened the trap door-right as I ran over a rock on the track. The rock zinged Jocko right between the eyes. He went crazy. He jumped on my neck and started scratching me to the point I almost wrecked a couple of times. Finally, I had to make a pit stop so we could put Jocko out of the car."

"Im the only driver in Nascar history to lose a race because we had to pit to get rid of a monkey."

May 30th, 1958: Fireball Roberts drives his Chevy to a win in the 500 mile event in Trenton, NJ. The 500 mile race is the first 500 mile race for stock cars North of Darlington on the map.

May 30th, 1971: Brothers Bobby and Donnie Allison finish 1st and 2nd in the World 600.

May 30th, 1976: David Pearson avoids a wreck with 3 laps left and takes the World 600. Female driver Janet Guthrie makes her Cup Series debut and finishes a respectable 15th.

May 30th, 1982: Neil Bonnett passes Bill Elliott with 13 laps to go and scores the win in the World 600.

May 30th, 1993: Dale Earnhardt overcomes 3 penalties in the World 600 and prevails to win the event. One is for rough driving after Earnhardt finds himself way behind the leaders, so he spins Greg Sacks intentionally to catch back up.

    Highlights

May 30th, 1999: Jeff Burton passes Bobby Labonte with 17 laps to go to win the Coca Cola 600. Rookie Tony Stewart competes in the Indy 500 earlier in the day and runs the 600 at night and makes history-scoring top 10 finishes in both huge races on the same day. (9th in Indy, 4th at Charlotte)

May 30th, 2004: Jimmie Johnson prevails at his sponsors track to win the Coca Cola 600.
