SPGU rookie card
Would you consider the Jersey #d rookie cards from SPGU a true rookie card. I've read some believe a rookie card must have print run of 99. What do you think? Are they overpriced in the secondary market?

They are the rookie cards, yes. This one isn't really a matter of opinion, it's widely accepted by the hobby community.

Print run has nothing to do with whether or not it is a "rookie" card (an unnumbered Young Gun is just as much a rookie card as an RPA/99). A rookie card is any card which is released of that player the first year he has official NHL cards (ie, minor league cards don't count). The only debate should be whether you consider parallels as "true" rookie cards or not -- as in, do you consider a Canvas Young Gun a "true" rookie card or just the YG. As with any debate, you'll have many different opinions.
But when someone is vehemently debating with you whether a card is a "true rookie" or not, it usually has to do with that person trying to sell you a card he considers a "True Rookie" (and, hence, trying to raise the price) or trying to buy yours, which he coincidentally considers not a "True Rookie" (and, hence, trying to lower the price).Last edited by Sharky94; 09-23-2015 at 05:21 PM.

I'll keep adding the conversation.... with some thought on where the confusion comes from:
Maybe years ago, I think it was 2001-02, Titanium (then a Pacific product) was the first to serial number rookie cards to the player's jersey number. This caused many RCs to be extremely SP'd, especially the Ty Conklin which was a 1/1.
Beckett, in their infinite wisdom, declared that a RC had to have at least 99 copies to be considered a "true" rookie card. The acceptance of that "rule" was varied. Some people bought in, others didn't.
Fast forward to the return of Titanium by Panini (the first of the recent sets to do it) and then SPGU by Upper Deck. They did the same thing.... however "the hobby" (and by that, I mean collectors in general) had scrapped the Beckett "must have at least 99 copies" years earlier. I don't think there was ever much of a discussion. The "base set" cards are serial numbered to jersey numbers, therefor they are rookie cards.

There isnt really any debate about parallels .... they are what you call them .... rookie parallels.
A true rookie 99% of the time has to belong to the base set of cards released. Every card released during a players rookie season is not a rookie card. A rookie can have 10+ different cards from the same release. For example:
National Treasures:
- True Rookie /99
- Rookie Parallel numbered to their jersey number
- Everything else - Rookie Insert
SPGU and Titanium Jersey numbered rookie cards are considered by the hobby to be true rookie cards. The auto rookies out of SPGU are not true rookie, and the draft version parallels for Titanium are not true rookies
*** EDIT ***
The 1% I am talking about has to do with box toppers. A few examples are:
- 11/12 Luxury Suite Rookie Auto Jerseys /99 ( box topper pack in Rookie Anthology )
- 12/13 Ultimate Auto Rookies /99 ( box topper pack in The Cup )
- 13/14 Ice Rookies ( random Ice packs inserted into various 13/14 products )
All these cards were pulled in bonus packs in other products. Not being part of a stand alone releases, some people do not consider these to be true rookies ..... but most in the hobby do consider most of these to be true rookies.Last edited by canucksfan007; 09-24-2015 at 12:21 PM.

18 auctions closing in the next 12 hours, and 9 of them call the Canvas YG a rookie card (my search terms were "canvas young gun"). Back when I studied math in school, that was about 50%, and I would say that is cause for a "debate." However, with "New Math" and Common Core, I don't know what constitutes a debate these days.
