The NHL is on the verge of taking the next step in addressing cocaine use among players.

According to TVA, drug testing in the league should include a test to detect cocaine by the end of the season.

Although the details have yet to be finalized, TVA reports that players who test positive for the drug will be enrolled in the NHL's substance-abuse program rather than face suspension.

The NHL already has a four-stage substance-abuse program for troubled players who struggle with addiction. Stage 1 is for players who volunteer for treatment and aren’t suspended as they seek help, while Stage 2 is for players who violate the first stage and are suspended without pay as they undergo treatment.

In September, Maple Leafs prospect Viktor Loov told the Swedish press "there is a lot of cocaine" in the NHL, adding "there is bound to be some in the AHL as well."
