Today in Nascar History July 22nd:

Winners on this date: Herb Thomas, Joe Weatherly, David Pearson, Harry Gant, Geoff Bodine, and Dale Jarrett.

Really nothing of interest today-a few notes.

In 1953 Nascar started a western swing on this date which included races in South Dakota and Montana.

Harry Gant and Geoff Bodine’s wins each were at Pocono.

Dale Jarrett’s was in 2001 at Loudon.

July 25th, 1993: Dale Earnhardt edges Ernie Irvan to the line and beats him by .005 seconds to win at Talladega, the 2nd closest finish in Nascar history. The race features two very scary accidents-the first when Neil Bonnett's car goes airborne and smashes into the catch fencing on the frontstretch, and the 2nd when Jimmy Horton's car flies out of the speedway in turn 2 over the wall. Stanley Smith is severely injured in the Horton crash.

July 25th, 2010: Jamie McMurray holds off Kevin Harvick and Greg Biffle to win the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis. The Daytona 500 winner becomes the 3rd driver to win the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400 in the same year and he gives owner Chip Ganassi a rare triple-having won the Daytona 500, Indy 500, and Brickyard 400 all in the same year. Ganassi's other car of Juan Pablo Montoya dominates the race for most of the day as he did in 2009 but crashes late in the going after taking 4 tires while the leaders take two.
