Today in Nascar History August 11th:

Winners on this date: Fred Lorenzen, Richard Petty (2 times), Bill Elliott, Ernie Irvan, Geoff Bodine, Tony Stewart, and Kyle Busch.

August 11th, 1974: Richard Petty beats David Pearson to win the Talladega 500. The night before the race sabotage takes place in the garage area. More than 20 cars are tampered with by an unknown individual.

August 11th, 1991: Ernie Irvan leads most of the race en route to victory at Watkins Glen. The race is tragic, as 52 year old driver JD McDuffie dies instantly when his car crashes and flips into a steel barrier :(

August 11th, 1996: Geoff Bodine ends a 2 year winless streak by taking a popular victory in his home state of New York at the Watkins Glen Road Course. Dale Earnhardt, driving with his bad injuries suffered at Talladega, remarkably sits on the pole and drives the whole race, finishing in the 6th spot.

August 11th, 2013: Kyle Busch holds off a charging Brad Keselowski on the final lap in another thrilling and wreck-filled race at Watkins Glen to score the victory. Busch's 27th career win is his 2nd at Watkins Glen and 3rd of the 2013 Season.

Today in Nascar History August 12th:

Winners on this date: Tommy Thompson, Tim Flock, Jim Paschal, Richard Petty, Dick Brooks, Darrell Waltrip, Ricky Rudd, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, and Marcos Ambrose.

August 12th, 1951: Rookie driver Tommy Thompson out-duels Curtis Turner in the final 18 laps as the two slam and bang on each other’s vehicles to win the Motor City 250 in Detroit. Thompson gets 5000 dollars for his victory.

August 12th, 1956: Tim Flock, using the windshield wipers in his Mercury, wins the road course event at Road America in Wisconsin. The race is run entirely in the rain without a hitch (back when stock cars were actually "stock" running in the rain wasn’t a problem)

August 12th, 1967: Richard Petty wins at Bowman Gray Stadium. It is his 19th victory of the year, breaking Tim Flock's old record of 18.

August 12th, 1973: Dick Brooks scores a tremendous upset win in the Talladega 500, driving for a team that previously had never finished above 16th in a race. It would be Brooks only career win. 1972 Rookie of the year Larry Smith dies in a crash during the event :(

August 12th, 2007: In the first race for the COT at Watkins Glen, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, and Carl Edwards engage in an exciting late race duel. Gordon wheel hops going into turn 1 with 2 laps to go and Stewart holds off a charging Edwards on the last lap to win for the 4th time at the Glen. The race has many exciting and weird moments-including a fight between Juan Pablo Montoya and Kevin Harvick, and a fan jumping over the fence to ask for Matt Kenseth's autograph under a red flag.

August 12th, 2012: In one of the wildest last laps in the history of the sport, Marcos Ambrose goes from 3rd to 1st to score the victory at Watkins Glen, his 2nd straight at the track. Cars end up sliding everywhere due to oil put down from Bobby Labonte's stricken car, making the track surface an ice rink. Leader Kyle Busch is the first to hit the slick spots and lets 2nd place Brad Keselowski get close enough to him to make contact and send him spinning. The rest of the chaotic last lap is a great duel between Keselowski and Ambrose, who go off course repeatedly and beat and bang without wrecking each other. Ambrose wins the battle to the line.

August 13th, 1961: Junior Johnson is declared the winner at Asheville Speedway in North Carolina after 258 of the 500 scheduled laps due to a deteriorating track. An angry mob of spectators (about 4000 of them) create a mob-like scene and hold the drivers and crew members hostage in the infield for nearly four hours to show their displeasure.

August 13th, 2000: Steve Park takes the win in an upset at Watkins Glen to score his first career Cup Series victory. Top contenders Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon collide going through the esses on lap 1 taking both out of contention-opening the door for Park and others.

August 15th, 2010: Kevin Harvick continues his dramatic turnaround season by winning at Michigan and locking himself into the chase. Harvick passes Denny Hamlin with 11 laps to go and pulls away from him and a trio of Roush cars to score his 3rd win of the year.

August 15th, 2011: Australian Marcos Ambrose passes Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski over the final two laps after a Green-white-checker restart to win a wild and crazy Monday race at Watkins Glen.
