My CALIFORNIA SEALS PC

A couple years ago, I was at a Caps alumni event that Dennis Maruk attended, and I decided to pick up a couple autographs. I wanted to make my brother jealous, so I got this jersey signed:



I grew up in the SF Bay Area, and my brother is five years older than me, so he actually got to go to some Seals games when we were kids. He was a big Maruk fan, even though Maruk only played one season in Oakland.

Not being a total ™™™™™™, I got my brother a signed Seals puck too, as well as one for me. I should have stuck with a silver Sharpie because my gold pen was old. But I thought gold would go better with the Seals logo. Oh well...



That all got me thinking of starting a new project, and I decided to try to put together a collection of every California/Oakland/Golden Seals card ever made. I figured they only played a total of nine seasons, and that was at a time when they didn't have super short-print inserts and printing plates. So it shouldn't be too hard to put together a Master Set of Seals cards, and that is what I started off to do. A short way into it, I also decided to make a second set for my brother. After I eventually found out that it wouldn't be as easy as I thought, I decided to simply make my brother's set just the standard Topps and OPC cards from the seasons they played, and I gave him that collection for Christmas after I finished.

The first problem I encountered was simply trying to find a complete checklist. I have searched high and low, and it simply doesn't exist. Of the checklists I could find, they were all incomplete, and most had at least some erroneous information (cards listed that were NOT Seals cards) as well as missing many Seals cards. For instance, SCF has 135 cards in its database, Beckett's has 282 cards, and Sports Card Database has 446. I have already identified 494 unique Seals cards, and I am certain I am still missing some. Now, those databases may and probably do have most, if not all, of those cards in the records, but they are not identified as Seals cards, so they can't be searched for.

My wife and I went to the Toronto Expo in the Spring of 2014, and that is when I decided to get serious. There aren't too many vintage hockey dealers in the US south of the Mason-Dixon, so I was not able to get very far until we hit Toronto. I talked my wife into going back for the Fall Expo too, and along with EBay, by Christmas time, I had completed my basic sets of the 68/69 to 76/77 Topps and OPC cards. My brother was quite happy with his Christmas present that year.

I didn't just stick with the basic sets for my own collection though. I started getting into all the oddball sets, regional releases, and stuff like that. I want a true Master Set. Up until recently, that would have been extremely expensive, but at least it would have been possible. Now I am not quite so sure, as I have now identified at least five different 1-of-1s. Anyway, let's start with the show:

There are 229 cards in the basic Topps/OPC sets with Seals players. Here's the 68-69 sets:



Of course, I didn't just stop there, so I picked up 10 more cards of guys with Seals jerseys in their pics on other teams, including three of the four different variations for 76-77 OPC #176 Gary Simmons (Barons). I have read about a fourth variation, but I have not yet seen one, so I am not 100% sure it exists.

Now just the stuff created in the 60s and 70s would have been enough. There are three extremely short-printed Shirriff coins that are extremely expensive (several hundred dollars each), and I have only seen them once in a complete set on EBay, and the guy was asking for something like $14K for the set.

But no, we aren't done. Thanks to the "new vintage" trend that is all over the hobby now, UD, Panini, and of course, ITG have been flooding the market with brand new Seals cards. And of course, most of it is now hard-to-find short prints, including the aforementioned 1-of-1s.

Except for one UD deck in 01-02, it mostly started in 04-05 with ITG's Franchises release. I have more than half of them, but still missing a few:

So all told, I have 444 of the 504 different cards I have identified so far. But I wasn't done yet. I was just getting started. In addition to the jersey and puck shown above, I have picked up some other odds and ends. I started off with a couple old programs:



Then I also picked up a game-used puck and some early media guides. The pennant in this picture was actually my brother's and was pinned to our bedroom wall for the past 40 years. I made him "trade" it to me for his Christmas present. But that is why it looks dirty, because it has 40 years of dust embedded in it.



Now if all that isn't enough, I got a stupid idea in my head one day to try to collect every Topps/OPC in graded PSA 10 condition. Its not like these are really rare cards and would be thousands of dollars each. I figured they are relatively recent enough that one might be able to find them in good condition. I soon found out that was not possible, so I decided to go with PSA 9 or 10. So far, I have 49 different cards graded PSA 9/10:



I figure this little job will last me forever, and maybe even longer. I know I won't pay $400 for one card like that, so even if I can find the cards, I may be unwilling to pay the price. But it will definitely keep me going and give me something to search for.

Are we done? Not yet. I read a thread someone posted here on SCF about collecting an autograph of every player that ever played a single game for the Edmonton Oilers. I thought that sounded like a fun and interesting challenge. So I decided to try to collect an In-Person autograph card of every player who ever had a Topps/OPC release. I currently have 33 of the 72 players that had an original release, although I will probably try to upgrade my Stan Weir card to get an original card.



I am sticking to just players that had a card in the original sets, and am not including company-released cards in the post-2000 releases. Interestingly, two of the players that have company-released autos in the post-2000 releases never had a Seals card in the original Topps/OPC sets. Bob Baun was the first captain of the Seals, but only played in their inaugural season before requesting a trade. Apparently the trade happened early enough, so Topps and OPC made his 68-69 card as a member of the Red Wings, although the Topps edition had his picture in a Seals uniform. Charlie Simmer played parts of two seasons with the Seals before being traded to LA, but apparently he did not play enough to get Topps/OPC to make a card of him. His one and only Seals card is the 10-11 Dominion Pen Pals card with Dennis Maruk (#/49 & 1/1).

This brings me to the final entry. Since Charlie Simmer was never on a Seals card from his playing days, I never bothered to search for anything related to him. In fact, I didn't even know he had ever played for the Seals until recently. I was skimming my way through a Dennis Maruk search when I stumbled across their Pen Pals card. And a couple weeks later, I am the proud owner of this beauty:



This is one of only five Seals one-of-ones. It is the only Seals dual-player 1/1, and the only Seals 1/1 that isn't Gary Simmons. It is now the cornerstone of my Seals collection, and was actually the impetus for me to collate all of this information in one place for your viewing pleasure. I had planned on doing it for a while, but I never came across anything that was so special it made me act. So you can thank Charlie Simmer and Dennis Maruk for the show...

Man, this is one of those incredible collections you can't help but marvel at Wow.

I love your dedication & personal history in being a fan of the Seals, it just makes this incredible collection that much more special in my opinion. Love it!

As for the cards themselves, I really like the history behind them, both vintage and modern alike. So much variety really looks great. My favourite has to be that dual auto 1/1, although, as a fan of the goalies, some of those Gary Simmons cards are superb as well

I would definitely consider applying for the SCF HOF as a Team Collector. It's just too good of a collection.

I was thinking of that. But since you can only be a Super Collector one time, I am saving that for my Tomas Hertl collection. I am waiting for The Cup to come out because that is the last set of the 15-16 season and his third year, and they want you to wait for three seasons to apply.
