    Today in Nascar History October 11th:


    Winners on this date: Speedy Thompson, Lee Petty, Marvin Panch, LeeRoy Yarbrough, Darrell Waltrip, Bill Elliott, Mark Martin, Dale Jarrett, Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, and Joey Logano.


    October 11th, 1992: Mark Martin wins at Charlotte while points leader Bill Elliott breaks an engine, leaving 6 drivers within 114 points of the lead with just a few races to go.



    October 11th, 2009: Jimmie Johnson wins the 2nd event at California Speedway for the 3rd consecutive year with another dismantling of the field.



    October 11th, 2012: Dale Earnhardt Jr. announces that due to concussion symptoms he will sit out the next 2 races, ending his chase hopes and giving Regan Smith an opportunity to drive the HMS 88 car. The announcement makes Charlotte the first race that will not include an Earnhardt in it since Talladega of 1979.



    October 10th, 2015: Joey Logano whips the field on a Sunday afternoon race in Charlotte locking himself in the round of 8 in the chase.

    Today in Nascar History October 12th:

    Winners on this date: Neil Cole, Fonty Flock, Fireball Roberts (2 times), Donnie Allison, Darrell Waltrip, Terry Labonte, and Jeff Burton.

    October 12th, 1957: Fireball Roberts takes the win at Newberry Speedway in South Carolina. Only 900 spectators turn out for the race, to this day the smallest attendance in Nascar history.





    October 12th, 1975: Darrell Waltrip wins at Richmond, giving DiGard Racing its first Cup Series victory.



    October 12th, 1997: Terry Labonte makes a late pass of brother Bobby and leads him to the line to take the win at Talladega. Much of the the top contenders are taken out in a massive accident midway through the race.

    October 12th, 2008: Jeff Burton takes the win in the night race at Charlotte as title contender Carl Edwards suffers ignition problems, greatly hindering his Chase efforts and giving points leader Jimmie Johnson a substantial cushion in the standings.

    Today in Nascar History October 13th:

    Winners on this date: Fireball Roberts, Junior Johnson, Jamie McMurray, Jeff Gordon, and Clint Bowyer.

    October 13th, 1963: Junior Johnson destroys the field at Charlotte in route to victory. It is the 7th of the year for Junior.





    October 13th, 2002: Jamie McMurray, making his 2nd ever career Cup Series start subbing for the injured Sterling Marlin in the #40 car, pulls off a stunning upset and holds off Bobby Labonte to win at Charlotte. McMurray becomes the quickest winner in Cup Series history since Johnny Rutherford won in his very first start at Daytona.



    October 13th, 2007: Jeff Gordon wins a wild event at Charlotte to close closer to his teammate and points leader Jimmie Johnson in the Chase. Ryan Newman pulls away on a late race restart and appears headed for victory when his tire blows and he crashes with 2 laps to go, giving Gordon the lead.



    October 13th, 2010: The 2011 class for the Nascar Hall of Fame is announced. David Pearson, Bobby Allison, Lee Petty, Ned Jarrett, and Bud Moore become the 2nd class of 5 to be inducted.




    October 13th, 2012: Clint Bowyer plays the fuel strategy game to perfection and scores the win at Charlotte, his 3rd of the year. Points leader Brad Keselowski falters a bit finishing 11th closing the gap of the top 4 in points. The race is also without an Earnhardt in the field as Dale Earnhardt Jr sits out due to his concussion, the first time since the late 1970s an Earnhardt has not been in a Cup field.

    Today in Nascar History October 14th:

    Winners on this date: Tim Flock, Frank Mundy, Marvin Burke, Junior Johnson, Benny Parsons, Darrell Waltrip, Ricky Craven, and Kasey Kahne.

    October 14th, 1951: 106 cars in total compete in the Nascar modified and sportsman division races at Langhorne Speedway. Massive crashes in each race injure multiple drivers and one of the races is completely stopped after 83 laps on the dangerous circle.






    October 14th, 1956: Curtis Turner wins the Nascar Convertible Series finale held at Orange Speedway, giving him his 22nd win of the year in the series. However Bob Welborn is the champion over Turner by 836 points.




    October 14th, 2001: Ricky Craven takes the lead after Kevin Harvick and Bobby Hamilton tangle late in the race at Martinsville, and the underdog driver fends off Dale Jarrett to score his 1st career Cup Series victory and the first for car owner Cal Wells.



    October 14th, 2006: Kasey Kahne, driving a slick blue special Mopar paint scheme, absolutely destroys the competition and romps to an easy victory at Charlotte.



    October 14th, 2009: In a historic day for Nascar and its history, Nascar announces the inaugural class of 5 for its Hall of Fame, set to open in 2010. The class consists of Bill France Sr., Bill France Jr., Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, and Junior Johnson.

    Today in Nascar History October 15th:

    Winners on this date: Herb Thomas, Lloyd Moore, Tim Flock, Joe Weatherly, Buddy Baker, Geoff Bodine, Dale Earnhardt, Jimmie Johnson, and Matt Kenseth.

    October 15th, 1967: Buddy Baker wins the 500 mile race at Charlotte, breaking Richard Petty's 10 race consecutive winning streak. It is also Baker’s first career Cup Series victory in his 215 starts.





    October 15th, 1989: Geoff Bodine passes the spinning cars of Ricky Rudd and Dale Earnhardt to take the win at North Wilkesboro. Rudd and Earnhardt beat and bang and Rudd spins Earnhardt out on the last lap taking both cars out in one of the more memorable short track finishes in Nascar history.

    October 15th, 2000: Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt completes a miraculous comeback and comes from 18th to 1st in 5 laps at Talladega to claim one of the most memorable wins of his career. It would be the Intimidator's last career win before his untimely death at Daytona in 2001.

    October 15th, 2005: Jimmie Johnson continues his dominance of Lowe’s Motor Speedway by winning the 500 miler at Charlotte.



    October 15th, 2011: Matt Kenseth passes the dominant car of Kyle Busch late in the going to score the win at Charlotte. Chase contender Jimmie Johnson crashes hard in the late stages, greatly diminishing his hopes of a 6th straight championship.

    Today in Nascar History October 16th:

    Winners on this date: Fonty Flock, Bob Flock, Speedy Thompson (2 times), Norm Nelson, LeeRoy Yarbrough, Rusty Wallace, Jimmie Johnson, Jamie McMurray, and Kevin Harvick.

    October 16th, 1949: Bob Flock wins the race at North Wilkesboro as Red Byron is crowned Nascar’s first Strictly Stock (now Cup) Series champion. Byron finishes 117.5 points ahead of 2nd place Lee Petty in the point standings.





    October 16th, 1960: Speedy Thompson drives the Wood Brothers Ford to the win at Charlotte. It is the Wood Brothers first superspeedway victory.



    October 16th, 2004: Jimmie Johnson dominates and wins at Charlotte to take the season sweep at the track.



    October 16th, 2010: Jamie McMurray continues his career year by winning at Charlotte. McMurray passes Kyle Busch on a late race restart to take his 3rd win of the season.




    October 16th, 2011: 2-time Indy 500 winner and Indycar champion Dan Wheldon perishes in a horrific accident at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Indycar event, becoming the first major driver to lose his life in an American oval Series event since 2006. At 33 he leaves behind a wife and two young children.



    October 16th, 2016:
    Kevin Harvick gets the jump on the last restart of the day and holds off a charging Carl Edwards to take the win in Kansas, locking himself into the next round of the Chase.

    October 17th, 1947: Bob Flock breaks his back in a crash at Spartanburg, SC, taking him out of contention for the NCSCC championship.



    October 17th, 1965: Fred Lorenzen outduels Dick Hutcherson, AJ Foyt, and Curtis Turner to win an epic late race duel at Charlotte and take the win. Harold Kite, who had just ended a 9 year retirement from racing, perishes in a crash on lap 2 of the event :(



    October 17th, 1982: Darrell Waltrip wins at Martinsville and takes the championship points lead by 37 as Bobby Allison has engine problems during the event.



    October 17th, 1998: Jeff Gordon takes the win in the rescheduled Pepsi 400 at Daytona. It is also the first race held under the lights at the track.



    October 17th, 1999: Dale Earnhardt passes Dale Jarrett with 4 laps to go at Talladega and goes onto the victory. It is Earnhardt's 74th career victory.



    October 17th, 2009: Jimmie Johnson wins at Charlotte, making it 3 wins in 5 races to start the Chase and his Chase for Nascar History and a 4th consecutive Cup Series Championship. Johnson's win gives him a 90 point lead over 2nd place Mark Martin in the standings.

    October 20th, 1968: 2nd year driver Charlie Glotzbach takes his 1st career Cup Series victory by winning the 500 mile race at Charlotte. It is Dodge’s 2nd superspeedway win of the year.





    October 20th, 1996: After a day of frustration in the pits which ruins his chances for victory repeatedly, Ricky Rudd does the unthinkable at Rockingham and doesn’t come get tires late in the race, choosing instead to stay out and take the lead. Rudd's choice is a good one, as he holds off the field for a big win.
