Austin ''Goose'' Gonsoulin, a former Pro Bowl safety for the Denver Broncos and a member of the team's Ring of Fame, has died. He was 76.
Gonsoulin died Monday while in hospice care in Beaumont, said Kathy Levingston of Levingston Funeral Home in nearby Groves, Texas. She did not have a cause of death but said Gonsoulin was battling prostate cancer.
Following a standout career at Baylor University, Gonsoulin was picked in the American Football League draft by the Dallas Texans, who then shipped him to the Broncos in the team's first trade.
Around the Mile High City, Gonsoulin was known as an ''Original Bronco.'' He led Denver in interceptions four times during his career and was enshrined in the team's Ring of Fame in 1984.
Gonsoulin arrived at his first camp in 1960 along with 120 other guys, some of whom were oil-field workers, and was concerned simply with making the roster.
He instantly stood out and had 11 interceptions his rookie season, which remains a Broncos record. Gonsoulin also played in five All-Star games - would've been six, but one of the games was canceled.
No matter how many interceptions or big plays he made, Gonsoulin always packed up his clothes from his apartment for every road game. He said in a 2012 interview with The Associated Press it was because, ''If they ever said, `You're not coming back,' well, at least I had my stuff, right?''
Really, though, Gonsoulin had no reason to worry. He came up with the American Football League's first interception against Boston and finished his Broncos career as the former league's all-time leader with 43.
Gonsoulin once had four interceptions in a game against Buffalo and another three off Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson.

Frank Torre, who spent parts of seven seasons in the big leagues with the Milwaukee Braves and Phillies, has passed away at the age of 82. He's of course the older brother of current MLB vice president of baseball operations and newly inducted Hall of Famer Joe Torre.

Here's the statement released by commissioner Bud Selig on Saturday:

"I am deeply saddened by the loss of Frank Torre, a close friend for nearly 60 years and a man who marked the start of a great baseball family. Before my career in baseball began, Frank and I formed a friendship that endured for decades, and I was touched to speak with him yesterday. Some of the fondest memories of my life involve Frank's Milwaukee Braves teams from 1956-1960, and his great play in the 1957 Fall Classic was one of the keys to bringing the World Series Championship to my hometown. Frank's longtime support of the Baseball Assistance Team, which helps the members of the baseball family who are in need, was an illustration of how much he cared about our game and the people who are a part of it.

"On behalf of Major League Baseball, I extend my deepest condolences to Frank's children and grandchildren, to Joe and Ali Torre, to Frank's sisters and to his many friends and admirers throughout our game."

Torre was born in Brooklyn in 1931 and was signed by the Boston Braves in 1950. He didn't make his big-league debut until 1956 in part because he spent two years in the military. In the 1957 World Series, Torre batted .300/.417/.900 with two home runs as his Braves prevailed over the Yankees in seven games.

In 1996, Frank underwent a successful heart transplant while Joe was managing the Yankees, against the Braves, in the World Series. Torre also underwent a kidney transplant in 2007.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Former Tennessee Titans kicker Rob Bironas died Saturday night after a car accident near his home, according to police.

Metro Nashville Police said Bironas, 36, lost control on a curve in his 2009 GMC Yukon Denali and crashed after 11 p.m. less than a mile from home. Police said in a statement on the department website that his SUV was speeding when it went off the road and hit a line of trees before coming to a stop upside down in a culvert.

Bironas was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Police said there was no evidence of alcohol or drugs at the scene.

The Titans released Bironas in March after nine seasons. The Tennessean reported Bironas had worked out earlier this week for the Detroit Lions and for Tampa Bay during the offseason.

Bironas married Rachel Bradshaw, daughter of Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw, in June. Police spokesman Don Aaron said a police chaplain was with her after the crash. Bradshaw did not appear on the "Fox NFL Sunday" pregame show and was going to Nashville to be with his
Rob Bironas holds the Titans' record for game-winning field goals with 11.
The Titans, who played at Cincinnati, issued a statement Sunday saying their thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family.

"We are deeply saddened to hear the tragic news from last night about Rob Bironas," the team said in a statement. "Rob made a significant impact as a player in his nine years with the team and more importantly touched many lives in the Nashville community off the field."

Bironas was the fourth most-accurate kicker in NFL history, connecting on 85.7 percent of his kicks (239 of 279). Only David Akers made more field goals (247) between 2005 and 2013 than Bironas. For kickers with 100 or more field goals since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, Bironas ranked third making 75.2 percent of his kicks from 40 yards or longer (94 of 125).

He finished as the Titans' second all-time leading scorer with 1,032 points, and he set a franchise record scoring triple digits in seven straight seasons. He also set an NFL record in 2011 in hitting a field goal from at least 40 yards in 10 consecutive games.

Bironas made a franchise-record 11 game-winning field goals during his career, including a 60-yarder against the Indianapolis Colts in 2006 that remains the longest field goal in Oilers or Titans history. Bironas kicked an NFL single-game record eight field goals in a 2007 victory over the Houston Texans, including a 29-yard game-winner as time expired. That helped him to make his only Pro Bowl, the same year he was an Associated Press All Pro.

"All I'm going to really say right now is my thoughts and prayers are out to Rachel and London, his son, and the Bironas family," said punter Brett Kern, who worked as Bironas' holder since 2009. "You never want to get that call in the morning that that happened. I'm just praying for them through this time."

"Rob was a real charismatic guy that always kind of brought smiles to people's faces around the building, around this team," quarterback Jake Locker said. "It's tough to see a guy like that, that young, really kind of just having the opportunity to start his life, he just got married, all those things, you feel for him, you feel for the loved ones that unfortunately are left behind now. You just pray that in some way they can be stringer and find a positive out of it."

Bironas went to Auburn and transferred to Georgia Southern where he won a Division I-AA national title. Bironas went to work for his father's company in Louisville, Kentucky, and was cut by Green Bay in 2002. He played in the Arena Football League and even the AF2 while spending time in training camps with Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh working as a part-time security guard and other jobs while trying to stick with an NFL team.

He won a roster spot with the Titans in 2005.

"To play in the NFL was the ultimate goal," Bironas said in December 2006.

Former NBA and ABA center Caldwell Jones has died at the age of 64 due to a heart attack. Jones played 14 seasons in the NBA and three in the ABA. The Philadelphia 76ers issued the following statement from CEO Scot O'Neill:

"We are truly saddened to learn of the passing of a special member of the Sixers family, Caldwell Jones. He was a consummate teammate, af riend to many and a player who was beloved and respected throughout the league. Our franchise and fans will always remember the impact and contributions Caldwell made to the city of Philadelphia.

"On behalf of our entire organization, we extend our deepest condolences to the entire Jones family during this difficult time."

Portland issued a statement, as well:

“It's a sad day when we lose a contributing member to our Trail Blazers history. Caldwell Jones's quiet but engaging demeanor off the court made him a favorite with Trail Blazers fans during his time in Portland. As a teammate and defensive presence on the court, he brought a fierce attitude and unselfish style of play that helped make the Trail Blazers one of the NBA's best defensive teams in the late 1980s. We extend our condolences to the Jones family and will remember Caldwell for what he brought to Rip City.”

Jones made the 1975 ABA All-Star Game, and he spent six seasons with the Sixers starting in 1976. He was sent to the Houston Rockets in 1982, then played for the Portland Trail Blazers from 1985 to 1989. Jones finished his playing career with the San Antonio Spurs in 1989-1990, where he served as a mentor for David Robinson. His three brothers, Charles, Wil and Major, all also played in the NBA.

The Oregonian's John Canzano reported that Jones spent his final day at church, brunch and the library with his family on Sunday. Many members of the NBA community paid their respects on Monday, including a lovely tribute from CSNNW's Dwight Jaynes.

WWE is saddened to learn that Ox Baker, a feared villain of the ring for more than three decades, passed away Monday morning at age 80. A 6-foot-5 behemoth from Waterloo, Iowa, Baker originally competed in WWWF in the late 1960s and became one of the most intimidating forces known inside the squared circle — both due to his unique look and devastating heart punch. Over the span of an impressive career, the big man traded blows with the likes of WWE Hall of Famers Hulk Hogan, Dusty Rhodes and Harley Race.

Outside the ring, Baker also put the hurt on actor Kurt Russell as the brute played an appropriately savage warrior in the post-apocalyptic world of John Carpenter’s 1981 sci-fi classic, “Escape from New York.”

WWE extends its condolences to Baker’s colleagues, friends and family.
