Evolution Of An MMA Fan
I think that many more people would enjoy MMA if they would take the time to learn about it and not just look at it as I once did as a bunch of guys hugging on the ground. One thing that bothers me quite a bit is how many people think that this sport that I have grown to love is perceived as fake or as someone recently said to me in a tread "Just like pro wrestling" It is anything but fake when run by a good organization like the UFC and can be hurt badly by a crap organization like EliteXC as they dealt MMA a serious blow with Kimbo Slice fiasco and the way they ran that so called organization. To those that will preview this I would like to add some scans of the new Topps Round one cards into the article but do not know how. Thank you.
The first MMA fight I can remember seeing was Royce Gracie vs Kimo on a tape I had rented from the local video store. Two things I remember from the fight, Kimo coming out carrying a huge cross and how well this small man (Gracie) was able to maneuver the big man with technique. I grew up a big guy and had always relied on strength, power and size to win any fight I may have gotten in and was just flabbergasted how this little mans technique (Graci Jujitsu) could just nullify the big Kimo's power, for the most part anyway. As those that saw the fight will remember though Gracie won the fight he was unable to advance due to injury and Kimo took his place. To tell the truth I started out as one of those that thought "Man this is just a bunch of guys rolling around hugging each other, but what the heck, why not watch these guys knock each others blocks off when they are not hugging."
I think that Dana White and crew have been good for the sport and they have certainly brought it into the mainstream of sports with their fight promotions and the creation of the Ultimate Fighter television series and I thank them for that show as it is one of the major things that helped me grow into the MMA fan I am now. As I watched more and learned, I got to the point where I can see what they are setting up and where they are trying to go with each setup. I can see a guy trying to get the "Hooks" in to control a fighter whose back they have taken, I can see them trying to set up for Kimura and I can see them bringing up their hips to capture an arm and trying to position for one of my favorite submissions the Triangle Choke.
MMA and the UFC have even become so mainstream that Topps Trading Card company is now producing the UFC Round one Trading cards and will be releasing the Round 2 card set in the near future.
I guess the main part of my evolution is that while I started off hating the what I thought at the time "Slow" action of the ground game I now almost would rather see an good battle on the ground with lots of submission attempts and many roll-outs or reversals than I would watch the stand-up game. Also as part of my evolution I like many have had to see my hero's in MMA rise and fall, mine being Chuck Liddell
and seeing him rise to the championship and fall to the younger lions coming up in the sport and Randy Couture loosing to Brock Lesnar and am now looking at the newer younger guys coming up like George Rush St. Pierre and Nate Diaz and seeing that MMA has evolved as well and will continue to do so. But I will always love the guys who got me started.

Hi there,
Just to make sure is MAA Mixed Martial Arts? Also, can you put the full name of the fighters please?
If you put the link to the pics you would like to add in your bucket and add the links here, I'll add them to the article.
Also, could you perhaps add a hobby angle to this piece? Do they make MAA cards?
Thanks and thanks for posting :)

No problem, I can do the card angle but like with Kimo that is all he goes by. Yes Mixed Martial Arts. I thought about adding a line about the new cards and I will get you links to some of my cards.
