This is the first in what is going to be a monthly series of articles featuring a player that is currently not playing professionally. These players are still playing in college, the minor leagues, developmental leagues or Canadian major juniors. The feature this month will feature Matt Szczur of Villanova University and the Chicago Cubs.

Matt Szczur currently is a Wide Receiver for the University of Villanova football program. He is used in both the passing and running games. During a recent 2010 FCS playoff game vs. Appalachian St., Szczur accounted for 150 yards and 5 touchdowns, including 1 passing. He was also was named the Most Outstanding Player in the 2009 NCAA FCS Division 1 Championship game after gaining over 250 yards rushing and receiving with 2 touchdowns vs. Montana.

Szczur is not just a 1-sport star; he has been draft twice by Major League Baseball teams. In 2007, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 38th round, and then was re-drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 5th round of the 2010 amateur draft. During the 2010 season, he played for the Cubs rookie and A level clubs. In 25 games, he batted .347 with 10 RBIís

His contract with the Cubs allowed him to play his senior season with Villanova, but will need to make a decision about his professional future by February 10, 2011 (as of this writing, no decision has been made). According to an article from Foxsports.com on September 2, 2010, Szczur stated, ďI absolutely love the minor leagues, but if I have a good football season Iíll probably go the football route if I have a chance to get drafted, because you make it faster. I love football too. Itís not like I like one better than the other.Ē

However, his greatness on the field pales in comparison to what Szczur did for a little girl in February 2010. Villanova coach Andy Talley for the last 30 years has had his players register for the national bone marrow registry. As a freshman, Szczur registered. During the 2009 FCS playoffs, Szczur got call regarding a girl who was 1 to 2 years old. The call came because his marrow was a match to the child in need.

Without hesitation, and weeks before what would be the National Championship game for Villanova, he told Talley about the call and the match. Szczur told Talley that he had no choice was going to save that girls life. While Szczur eventually was able to play in the 2009 FCS National Championship Game, he did miss games for Villanova Baseball in May of 2010. His last at-bat before the donating and his first at-bat back where both Home Runs!

If you are looking for someone to build a collection around, Matt Szczur might be a great start for you. Having the potential to play in either the NFL or MLB could appeal to you in wanting to collect his cards. More importantly, he took a major risk in order to save the life of another person. This fact alone is a great reason to become a fan of Szczur. I know I am!

Matt's a great guy, I wrote an article about him after last year's title game (this was before the marrow donation) and his mother read it and emailed me about. We still keep in touch. I actually might shoot her an email about getting an interview with him...thanks for the reminder, lol.
